I lived in Munich more than 25 years and now flying out to my hometown from Toronto twice a year, tried several hotels in Munich. So In this post, I’ll share my own experiences of where to stay in Munich (which hotels) and the best areas to stay in Munich as a first-timer and frequent-traveler.
Munich is the capital of Bavaria and the home to the world’s biggest beer festival, the one and only Oktoberfest. Additionally it’s a very beautiful regions in Germany, if you love hiking, lakes and farms. It’s just 2 hours drive to Austria and iconic castles like the Neuschwanstein.

How to get around in Munich: Munich has an excellent public transportation and you can easily travel around with Ubahn (metor) & Sbahn. Most of the attractions are in the old town or Schwabing, where you can easily walk around.

1. Altstadt-Lehel
Like most of the cities in Europe, Munich’s attractions and hidden gems are mostly located in the old town called Altstadt (city center). I know that can be overwhelming with booking the right hotel in a quite place in any downtown, so I’ll make the decision easier for you with my guide.
I must say that, most of the hotels in the old town are expensive and luxury. But the good news is that also other Munich’s best areas to stay are not that far from the city and you can easily walk or take a metro to the center within 10-15 minutes.

Hotel Beyond By Geisel: Luxury Hotel with best View
This is the only hotel with a panoramic view of the Munich’s Rathaus (the historic town hall) and unbeatable location. No wonder the high rating of 9.9 by Booking.com or Expedia for this beautiful, unique hotel. It’s one of the best hotels in Munich Germany, when not the best one.
Also the view from the King suit, is the most instagrammable view of Marienplatz. We loved the service and the breakfast with the best service and high-end experience, so the experience is definitely worth it. Definitely it’s a luxury hotel with amenities like Shuttle service or Valet parking. Check it out here!
Hotel Platzl: Pure luxury in a Fairytale location with best Price
Platzl is the cutest area in the Munich’s old town and the best hotel in Munich for being close to the one and only Hof Hofbräuhaus. Walking in this area, truly feels like a fairytale. And Hotel Platzl Superior is exactly in the middle of that. We enjoyed our stay in this cozy hotel with fantastic staff.
We have had the newly launched superior suites at the Hotel Platzl this year and I must say, it’s so difficult to leave. The rooms are spacious and beautiful. What I love about this hotel, is that you’re actually 5 minutes away from everything, but still it’s a quiet area.
Also the famous Hofbräuhaus München is right at the back side of the hotels and Marienplatz is just 5 minutes walk. This is definitely my favorite hotel in the luxury category in Munich, as the price is also doable and is a great value for this hotel.
Also we enjoyed the spa area and the huge Breakfast buffet with fresh juices and a great bread selection. You really don’t need a lunch afterward. This hotel sells out fast, so we recommend to book early in advance. Check out the availability here.

Hotel MIO by AMANO: Affordable central Hotel
What I love about this hotel is the modern interior and definitely the location. We booked our room at hotel Mio for $350/night, which is a great price for a 4-star hotel in Munich. You’re basically between theAsam church (the most viral church on Instagram) and the Kaufingerstrasse (which is the shopping street of Munich).

Asam Church: This is the most beautiful church in Munich. It’s also called the dark church, as it’s interior is mostly black with golden decoration. The enterance is free and it’s just a short walk from Marienplatz and a true hidden gem.

2. Au-Haidhausen
Having lived in this part of the city, I love to stay there when I’m visiting Munich again. But it’s not just the vibrant atmosphere there, it’s also the proximity to the Altstadt. Also you can enjoy a kind of Parisian vibe in the middle of Munich, with cozy cafes and fantastic restaurants. Check my free guide for the best restaurants in Munich!
You’re basically located next to the Deutsches Museum and Volksbad (the historical public pool & sauna). It’s also just a short walk from Isar (Munich’s main river) along the Englischen Garten. You can walk to Marienplatz in 10-15 min, or just take the subway and be there in 5 min (2 stations).
This is one of the most beautiful and affordable areas to stay in Munich, that not everyone knows about it. We love to stay in this part of the city. So let’s dive in:
Holiday Inn Munich City: Affordable Hotel – view & big rooms
This hotel is one of our favorite hotels in Munich on a budget trip. We booked our room in March this year for $107/ Night and believe me the rooms and hotel have a 4-star standards. The rooms are spacious and modern. (Photo above)
If you’re lucky and your room is on higher floors, you’ll havea fantastic view of the Munich city. See below the photo we took from our room. It’s very convenient, as the Metro station and a shopping mall is right below the hotel. It’s a 15 min. walk to Marienplatz or 2 stations with metro. Check the price here:
Hilton Munich City: Affordable Luxury with good Amenities
If you want a bit higher standards, Hilton Munich City is a very good option. What I love about this hotel is it’s free 24-hour gym, it’s beautiful restaurant and the location.
It’s just 15 minutes walk from the Old City of Munich or 2 stations (5 min.) with Sbahn, which is right below the hotel. The rooms are spacious and clean facing the inner courtyard. We loved the lobby and even as locals, we used to go there with friends to chill out. You can check the prices here.
Motel One: A Budget Designer Hotel
Motel One is a designer hotel and if you wonder where to stay in Munich on a budget, this is a very good option. We paid $80/Night for our stay last year and quite enjoyed it. But that’s also the reason, why this hotel sells out fast and you really need to book very early. Check the availability here.
The Lobby is spacious and very modern. The rooms are also clean and they have basic standards, but they’re not spacious. We still quite enjoyed our stay and specially the breakfast buffet is fantastic.
3-Schwabing
Another great area to stay, specially for Solo travelers is Schwabing. Schwabing is the trendy area of Munich with artisan shops and small boutiques. Located near Munich’s university, close to the Leopoldstrasse, it’s one of the most vibrant areas in Munich. We love to go out there with friends at night or just wander through the lively streets.
Because of it’s proximity to the unveracity, it’s full of students and it’s alive. It’s also home to some of Munich’s best bars and cafes, where you can enjoy the nightlife. So even if you don’t stay in this area, I recommend to visit. Also read our guide for the best restaurants in this area.
Although it’s not directly in the old town, but it’s very close and you’ll love the walk to the Odeonsplatz. We call this street the Champs-Elysées of Munich. Also you can take the Ubahn (subway) and in 2-3 Stations depends on where you exactly stay in Schwabing, you’ll be on Marienplatz. So let’s dive in!
Schwabinger Wahrheit By Geisel: Big Rooms & Modern
One of our favorite hotels is the Schwabinger Wahrheit. Although it’s located in the heart of Schwabing, it’s the best place to relax. Even the interiors are so relaxing and very close to the Leopoldstrasse. Since the rooms are spacious, it’s one of the best hotel to stay in Munich with kids.
The underground parking is making it even more convenient and the hotel personal is so friendly. The Metro station is within a 5 min walk and you can even walk to old town in around 20-25 minutes. We paid $220/night for our double room, but Schwabinger Wahrheit sells out fast, so you need to book it early. check out the availability and prices here.
Andaz Munich Schwabinger Tor: Best Family Hotel
If you’re looking for a family hotel in Munich, this is one the best options to stay in Munich with kids. Very big rooms and close to the English Garden. It also has a fantastic spa and fitness center with a pool. We love the panoramic view of the rooftop bar, where you can see the Alps and the city under your knees.
The only thing is that you can’t walk to the city, as it’s located a bit far on the Leopoldstrasse. But you can easily get the subway to Marienplatz (4 stations). This luxury hotel has a fantastic restaurant as will that serves Bavarian dishes and we love the meat there. Check here for the Availability.
Oktoberfest Munich
Oktoberfest is the biggest Beer festival in the world and it happens yearly from September 19 to October 4th, 2026. Check the dates here.

4-Ludwigsvorstadt – Isarvorstadt
This is also another great area to stay in Munich, because it’s central, lively with lots of bars and trendy restaurants with good food. Also it’s close to the Theresienwiese, where the Oktoberfest festival is happening. We love this part of the city as locals, as it’s not touristy and more a hidden -gem with lots of options.
Even if you’re in Munich just for a visit and not during Oktoberfest, this area is a fantastic place to stay in Munich. We just came back from Bavaria in September, where we stayed at the Novotel Arnulfpark, and really enjoyed our stay.
Ludwigsvorstadt is very close to the city, depending on which part you stay and if you’re asking where to stay in Munich for Oktoberfest, this area is definitely very close to it. This area is also home to some of the best hotels Munich, if you want to be close to Theresienwiese and the old town.
Hotel Cocoon Theresienwiese: Best Oktoberfest + Family Hotel
You can’t get closer to the Oktoberfest. This Hotel has an excellent location and is the best hotel to stay in Munich for Oktoberfest. Also If you’re visiting Munich with kids, they’ll love the rooms, because of it’s colorful and family-friendly design. Prices are affordable and we paid $200 for a big family room (Atrium View).
We normally book this hotel if we’re planning for a longer stays, as the rooms have a kitchen, there’s a bakery and a grocery shop nearby and it’s a relaxed atmosphere. Oktoberfest is right across the street and Old Town is just 4 subway stations away from you. Check the availability here.
5- Neuhausen – Nymphenburg
Neuhausen is another beautiful part of the city, which is closer to the Hauptbahnhof (main train station). We normally stay here if we want to do day-trips. Due to it’s proximity to the train station, it’s very practical. On the other hand it’s still away from the bustle of the city and is more quite and relaxed.
Neuhausen is one of the best neighborhood Munich’s, with cozy restaurants. There are some top hotels in this part of the city as well, as there are many big companies like google and apple located there.
But we only stayed once in this area and I can say that it’s one of the best neighborhoods to stay in Munich. We will surely try more hotels next time to give you more options.
Novotel – Arnulf Park: Spacious Rooms with Design & Budget
We really enjoyed our stay at Novotel Munich. It’s very convenient and clean, with big rooms and a bar-restaurant. I could meet all my old friends there. I loved the underground parking, the huge lobby and the rooms are spacious. We paid $200/night for our stay.
You can easily reach Hauptbahnhof with the Street car in front of the hotel (3 stations). From there Old town is just 5 minutes walk. Check the prices here!
Frequently asked Questions:
Where to avoid staying in Munich?
Munich is a safe city and from the safety point of view, you can almost stay everywhere except Hasenbergel and Am Hart. Those areas could be a bit unsafe to go back to your hotel, late at night. Besides they are far from the city.
Additionally there are places that are a bit far from the city and are less accessible with public transportation. These are Thalkirchen, Obersendling, Freimann, Laim and Giesing. If you’re staying only for a couple of days, you don’t want to spend a lot of time on a train or on a bus.
I also don’t recommend staying very close to the Hauptbahnhof, because especially at night it’s too loud and I personally prefer not to walk back to the hotel alone.
Where to stay in Munich in December
Munich is one of the best cities to visit during holidays. Specially from End of November till December 24th. Most probabely you heard of the German Christmas Markets and you can find some of the best ones in the Altstadt of Munich.
So I do recommend to stay close to the Altstadt-lehel in December, to be able to easily walk around and enjoy the Christmas Markets at Marienplatz, Stachus and Sendlinger Tor.
