1. Sultanahmet (Old City) – For History Lovers & First-Time Visitors

We love to stay in Sultanahmet ,although we’re frequent travelers, some people might find it expensive and quite loud. Yes, it’s the heart of historical Istanbul, although it’s also the best area to stay in Istanbul, if you’re a first-time visitor.

This neighborhood is home to iconic landmarks such as the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, and the Basilica Cistern. What I love about the Sultanahmet area is its oriental charm and those rugs and authentic restaurants.

Additionally walking through Sultanahmet feels like stepping back in time, with cobblestone streets, Ottoman-era architecture, and a peaceful ambiance.

Why stay in Sultanahmet?

Istanbul is a big city and you’ll need to spend a lot of time on traffic or transportation to reach the Sultanahmet area. So if you’re planning to stay only for a few days or as a first-timer, then I would suggest staying in Sultanahmet, because of the walking distance to major attractions.

Furthermore, If you’re a photographer like us, you’ll find every minute of it, a model for your photography. This is unlike some other areas in Istanbul. It’s also very Family-friendly and safe. Istanbul can also have some unsafe areas, which we will talk about shortly, so you can’t really stay everywhere.  

Dining Tip: Try traditional Turkish breakfast at Tarihi Sultanahmet Köftecisi and enjoy Turkish tea with a view at Seven Hills Restaurant.

2. Taksim & Beyoğlu – For Nightlife & Shopping

This is the second area we love to stay in Istanbul, specially if we want to enjoy the modern life of Istanbul or do some shopping. This area’s vibrant nightlife, shopping on Istiklal Street, and cultural venues like Atatürk Cultural Center are must-visits.

On the other hand Beyoğlu, adjacent to Taksim, offers a mix of old and new with historic buildings, art galleries, and trendy cafes.

Why stay in Taksim & Beyoğlu?

It has a Lively atmosphere day and night so that means, you can walk on Istiklal street even late at night and it’s always full of people. 

Additionally it has an excellent public transport connections. Metro, taxi and Uber are everywhere and you can easily travel to other areas of the city without breaking the bank. 

It’s also a good area for both Solo travelers (as it’s also safe to walk alone and also for couples. You’ll really enjoy the liveliness.

What to See in Beyoğlu

Istiklal Street (specially for shopping and tram ride), Galata Tower, Taksim Square, Cihangir, Pera Museum, St. Anthony of Padua Church, Çiçek Pasajı, Galataport, Karaköy, and the Museum of Innocence.

Photography Tip: Head to Galata Tower specially at night or just before sunset for golden hour shots. If you climb the tower you can get some fantastic shots from Bosphorus and the old city.

Pro Tip: Visit Çiçek Pasajı late afternoon for beautiful light and charming, quiet vibes—great for unique photos away from the crowds.

3. Karaköy & Galata – Trendy & Scenic

We are totally in love with Karaköy and the Galata area and love to walk from the Bosphorus promenade to Galata tower during the sunset. Besides those 2 areas are among the most picturesque neighborhoods in Istanbul.

Additionally with the Galata Tower offering panoramic views and the waterfront lined with cafes and art spaces, this area is perfect for you if you’re creative and love cruises.

Why stay at Karaköy & Galata:

It’s the artistic part of Istanbul. If you’re an art lover and into boutique hotels, we highly recommend this area. Above all it has a fantastic bohemian vibe.

Additionally it’s very close to Bosphorus with it’s stunning views. If you like walking along the river, this is your place to go. 

Due to it’s proximity to both Old City and Taksim, it’s very walkable and enjoyable. Besides it’s great to just sit in one of the Cafes along the Bosphorus and enjoy the view.

What to See in Karaköy & Galata

Galata Tower, Karaköy waterfront, Galata Bridge, Salt Galata cultural center, The Museum of Innocence, Archaeology Museum, street art in Karaköy, and local cafés and boutiques.

Photography Tip

Visit the Galata Tower rooftop just before sunset to capture sweeping views of the Bosphorus, Golden Horn, and Istanbul’s historic skyline—perfect for stunning wide-angle and cityscape shots.

4. Kadıköy (Asian Side) – Local Life & Budget-Friendly

It’s interesting, because the first time I went to Istanbul, I was just a student and wanted a budget-friendly hotel, so I booked a hotel in Kadıköy, which was a bustling district on the Asian side of Istanbul, offering a more authentic and local experience.

But I must say that I really miss that local vibe and we sometimes go back there. Additionally you can find fantastic food options for a very affordable price and budget-friendly hotels. Also It’s known for its markets, street art, and food scene.

Pro Tip: The ferry ride from Kadıköy to the European side is a scenic experience in itself, so I wouldn’t miss that. You can also get a Bosphorus Yacht Cruise with Stopover on the Asian side, which we highly recommend. Here is the link if you want to book.

Why stay here?

The hotels in this area are normally more affordable than the touristic areas said above and also the food has a higher quality with better prices. Local markets and eateries in Kadıköy Market offers a fantastic locals shop for fresh produce, spices, cheeses, and seafood.

Believe me you will leave with bags full of delights in your hands. Nearby, you’ll find plenty of cozy cafés, traditional meyhanes (Turkish taverns), and trendy eateries serving everything from classic street food like balık ekmek (fish sandwich, you must try) to modern fusion dishes. 

Furthermore it’s the less touristy, more relaxed area of Istanbul. This is the best place if you want to be away from the tourist crowds. Although it’s a bit far from the classic tourist areas like Sultanahmet.

Dinning Tip: Try the famous Çiya Sofrası for traditional Anatolian dishes.

By ferry from Eminönü or Karaköy, it takes about 20–25 minutes to cross the Bosphorus to Kadıköy’s lively waterfront. From Sultanahmet or Taksim, you’d typically take a tram or metro to a ferry terminal, then the ferry across.

What to See in Kadıköy

Walk along the Moda waterfront near sunset to capture beautiful views of the Sea of Marmara and the European side skyline, with colorful fishing boats and locals enjoying the seaside ambiance—ideal for warm, inviting photos.

What are 5 things to know before visiting Istanbul?

1. Cash is Still King (Sometimes)

While many places accept cards, small shops, street vendors, and taxis often prefer cash—especially Turkish Lira. It’s smart to carry a bit on you just in case.

2. Dress Modestly for Mosques

When visiting mosques like Hagia Sophia or the Blue Mosque, you’ll need to cover your shoulders and knees. Women should bring a scarf for their head—although many mosques offer loaners at the entrance.

3. Istanbul is Huge and Hilly

This city spans two continents and has a lot of walking involved—often uphill. Wear comfy shoes, and don’t underestimate travel times, especially with traffic.

4. The Ferry Ride is a Must

Crossing from Europe to Asia by ferry isn’t just transportation—it’s an experience! Cheap, scenic, and surprisingly peaceful, it’s a great way to see the skyline from the water.

5. Taxis Can Be Tricky

Taxis are plentiful but not always reliable. Some drivers may refuse short trips or take longer routes. So our tip is to ask them in advance how much they will charge and bargain. You can also use apps like BiTaksi or Uber to see your fare upfront. 

Which areas in Istanbul are dangerous?

In general, Istanbul is a safe city, but you need to be cautious about pick pocketers and if you’re traveling alone (specially as a girl), we wouldn’t recommend being outside in the non-touristic areas after 10pm. Here are the areas that we do not recommend to stay: 

1. Tarlabaşı (near Taksim)
   although it’s located just behind the glamorous Istiklal Street, but it’s known for poverty, abandoned buildings, and occasional petty crime.
2. Aksaray
   Busy and chaotic, with a reputation for scams, aggressive touts, and low-quality tourist traps.
3. Esenler & Bağcılar
   These are large, working-class districts on the outskirts of the city—not touristy, and as per some friends in Turkey, it’s not safe at night.
4. Gaziosmanpaşa & parts of Fatih (away from tourist sites)
   While Fatih includes major attractions, some backstreets and outer areas can feel a bit unsafe, especially if you’re alone. So we do recommend avoiding non-tourists sites.

General Safety Tips:

• Stick to well-lit, busy streets, specially at night and avoid deserted alleyways and run-down areas, even if Google Maps shows a shortcut.
• Be cautious with overly friendly strangers offering unsolicited help or tours and keep your valuables secure, especially in crowded trams or markets.
