Sorrento is a beautiful city and is the best gateway to your Amalfi Coast trip. But There’s also so many things to do in Sorrento, as this town offers lots of free activities and sightseeing. In this guide, I’ll show you the top things to see and do in Sorrento Italy in 2026.
We went back to Sorrento last year in September and decided to stay in Sorrento and explore the Amalfi Coast. The reason was that Amalfi is very expensive in September, but Sorrento not. And it’s just 30 minutes ride from Sorrento.
Also you can find amazing hotels in Sorrento for every budget. Capri, Positano and Amalfi town are just a short ferry or bus drive from Sorrento (around 45 minutes). You also don’t want to miss to visit the beautiful places around Sorrento.

Where is Sorrento Italy?
Sorrento is located in southern Italy, about 30 minutes from Amalfi Coast and an hour from Naples. Sorrento is also a coastal city by Mediterranean sea and it’s coastal cliffs are jaw-dropping.
Last year we visited Naples for the second time and on our way to Amalfi Coast, we decided to stay in Sorrento and explore this beautiful city again. And that was the best decision, we’ve ever made. Sorrento is much cheaper than Amalfi Coast even during the high-season and is very accessible. And there’s so much to do in this amazing city.
Best Way to get to Sorrento
You can reach Sorrento by train, by bus or by ferry. We love to take the ferry from Naples to Sorrento, because it’s the most scenic one and we can take lots of beautiful photos.
How to Reach Sorrento from Naples:
You can easily take the ferry from Naples to Sorrento. it takes around 45 minutes and costs around 14 Euros with fantastic views. If you prefer train, just take the Campania Express train from Napoli Centrale for 14 Euros and you’ll be in Sorrento in 1 hour. For a more budget option, you can also book a FlixBus (that might take a bit longer).

How to Reach Sorrento from Rome or Florence:
You can either take the high Speed train from Rome or Florence to Naples. Then you can choose one of the options above. We normally take the Ferry from Naples to Sorrento. Does Sorrento have an airport?
Sorrento doesn’t have an airport, so the closest airport to Sorrento is Naples International Airport.
How to get from Naples Airport to Sorrento: If you don’t want to take the train to come to the city of Sorrento (to catch the train station), there are direct shuttle Buses at the airport. We recommend to book the shuttle bus online before traveling. It’s around $40/person and takes around 1,5 hour. Check the schedule of the shuttle bus here!
What is Sorrento Known for?
In general southern Italy is known for it’s lemon farms and lemon products. But the famous lemons for Limoncello are coming from Sorrento. So make sure you try one lemon Sorbet or a shot of Limoncello. We were addicted! It’s so delicious and so different than the lemons we’ve had anywhere else.
Also the cliffside of Sorrento is so different and scenic. Adding to all these, I found Sorrento much cheaper for shopping handcrafted woodworks, shoes and cloths. So if you want to buy something, I would suggest to buy in Sorrento. Amalfi Coast specially Positano, Amalfi town and Ravello are very expensive cities.
For Travelers with mobility problems: Another thing we loved about Sorrento, was that the city is flatter than the town on the Amalfi Coast. Also there is a lift to take you from the town (which is located higher than the beach) to the beach and ferries. That makes Sorrento very comfortable for all kind of travelers.

1. Explore the Vibrant Piazza Tasso
We loved to sit at the Piazza Tasso which is the lively heart of Sorrento. I love sitting at an outdoor café like Fauno Bar watching people go around and enjoy my cappuccino. Yes! It’s such an Italian flair, busy and full of vespas, locals and travelers.
It’s also good to know that this charming square is named after the poet Torquato Tasso and you’ll see his statue right in the middle of the square. Around the square, you’ll find elegant 19th-century buildings, churches, and classic Italian architecture that make it perfect for photos.
Pro Tip for parking: If you’re traveling with a private car, to Sorrento and don’t stay overnight, you can park in the parking called Fuorimura Parking at the Torquato Tasso for $3/hour.
2. Visit Capri Island as a Day-Trip
The best boat tour from Sorrento is the day-trip from Sorrento to Capri. Capri is a very beautiful island and you don’t want to miss that. I even loved Capri more than Positano, because it’s small, scenic and full of hidden gems. It’s only a 45 minutes ferry ride with the most fantastic views.
How to Get from Sorrento to Capri
You can get the ferries, which are departing hourly from Sorrento’s Port, Marina Piccola, to Capri daily. During summertime they leave every 30 minutes. You can either walk down to the Ferry station or take the elevator from the city center to the ferry terminal.
it’s around 15 minutes walk, so make sure you have enough time to catch your ferry.
Where to buy tickets for Capri Ferry in Sorrento?
We always get the tickets at the ticket booths and it’s quite easy. There are several booths and the prices are normally the same. We paid around 43 Euros for both sides. We booked the high-speed ferries that take around 40 minutes. (they say 25 minutes at the station, but we did that ride several times, and it’s always around 40 min.).
Last year we booked them online on Omio and it was easy, and you have the option to see the departure time too, so we prefer to book at Omio. You can check the times and availability of the ferry tickets here.
Fun Thing to do in Sorrento – Blue Grotto
If you’re looking for a fun thing to do in Sorrento, then you should definitely book a private Boat Tour from Sorrento to Capri with the Blue Grotto visit. We did it this time and Blue Grotto is a must-visit. Because it’s one of those once-in-a -lifetime experiences.
It’s actually a hidden cave that you can drive inside with a boat. The enterance is a bit scary, as you can see above, but if there are no waves it’s absolutely easy. The water inside the cave is unbelievably beautiful and we really enjoyed swimming there. Afterward, you’ll have a tour in Capri. Here you can book the private Boat tour that we took.
3. Visit the Old Town of Sorrento (Centro Storico)
For those who are looking for typical narrow Italian streets with charm, that’s the right place for you. Although Sorrento is not a very big city, but it’s home to some of the most historic churches in southern Italy. Also the Old Town of Sorrento is full of narrow passages and also many lemon shops.
Which Historical Places to visit in Sorrento, Centro Storico:
1- One of my favorite places for photography is the Cloister of San Francesco. It’s always on our list, whenever we’re visiting Sorrento. It’s one of the best places in Sorrento to relax and enjoy the beautiful court yard from 14th-century. I love to sit there for half an hour and relax. Entry is free and it’s next to Villa Comunale.
2- Another beautiful place to visit in Sorrento is the Cathedral (Duomo di Sorrento) with its beautiful frescoes and fantastic architecture. This beautiful church is from 11th century. Since this church is still being used by locals, you have to dress modestly (covered shoulders and knees). It’s also Free to enter.
3- Also Basilica di Sant’Antonino is another beautiful one, which was dedicated to the town’s patron saint and should be on your list. I’s located right in the main square and it’s also free to enter.

Shopping in Centro Storico in Sorrento (Via San Cesareo)
One of the fun things to do in Sorrento town is definitely to go shopping. What I love to buy there are some silk or cotton dresses for as cheap as $20 sometimes. This is while you can find the same quality in Positano for couple of hundreds more. So if you want to do shopping in Italy, Sorrento is a fantastic place.
Sorrento is also famous for its ceramics and woodwork shops. So if you like ceramics with olive or lemon on it, that’s a great place to buy. Although because they are really hand made, the prices are not cheap. But definitely one of the best souvenirs from Sorrento.
4. Enjoy the Beaches in Sorrento
One of the best things to do in Sorrento during summer is to enjoy the beach time. Sorrento has a great main beach and a couple of other beaches. The main beach of Sorrento is called Peter’s Beach and it’s directly in the city.
Does Sorrento have good beaches?
Sorrento has great beaches with breathtaking views. The cliffs in Sorrento are really jaw-dropping, and the turquoise water is very inviting. You can definitely swim perfectly in Sorrento and relax on the beach
What are the Best Beaches in Sorrento
The closest beach in Sorrento Town is the Peter’s Beach, which is directly in the city. You just have to walk down from the Piazza Tasso (main square) toward Marina Piccola. It’s just a 15 minute walk on foot.
How to Reach peter’s Beach in Sorrento: Also you can take the public lift near the Villa Comunale park to go down to the sea level. it costs around 1 Euro one way. We normally take the elevater to return, so that we don’t have to hike up the cliff.
Once you arrive there, you’ll see all the private beach clubs in Sorrento along the Peter’s beach. no matter which one you take, it’s around 20-30 Euros per person for a sunbed. They charge around 8 Euros extra for the umbrella. The prices are seasonal and they are definitely higher during summer months.
Marina Grande Beach Sorrento: Authentic and Charming
Another favorite of mine and a must-visit is the Marina Grande Beach in Sorrento. It’s actually an old fishing village and a true gem. Also it’s the most picturesque beach in Sorrento and perfect for photography. We love to spend hours there doing photography.
How to get to Marina Grande Beach in Sorrento: you can either walk down there from Piazza Tasso through Via Marina Grande in around 15 minutes. Or you can take the bus. Since it’s a bit Steep, you can walk down to see the beautiful colorful houses and get the bus back up.
Top Restaurants at Marina Grande:
Marina Grande is one of the best places to eat the best seafood dishes in Sorrento. The fish is sooooo fresh, because they get it directly in the morning and serve it at noon .
Our favorite restaurant in Marina Grande is Bagni Delfino and you have to try the Spaghetti alle Vongole (clams) and their seafood risotto. Also if you’re a Gnocchi lover, don’t forget to try that too. It’s heaven for sea-food lovers.
5. Take a Day-Trip from Sorrento to Amalfi Coast
In my opinion, Amalfi Coast is the most beautiful place in the world, so if you’re just 30 minutes away from this paradise, you don’t want to miss that. Amalfi Coast has many small towns, but the most beautiful ones are Positano, Amalfi Town and Ravello.
The best thing about Sorrento is that you can take the ferry to Positano and Amalfi. And then take the bus from Amalfi to Ravello.
How to go from Sorrento to Amalfi Coast
If you’re in Sorrento for a short time, we recommend to book a day-tour to Amalfi Coast. Because ferries can be even more expensive than a tour, if you want to go from town to town and it’s time-taking.
Even if you’re driving with your private car, we rather suggest to go with a tour to Positano and Amalfi town, as the parkings are 10 Euros/hour, which is expensive. Also they are a bit far away from the core downtown and you might need to walk up and down the hill.
Pro Tip: We find it much easier to get a tour, although we’re normally driving with our rental car along Italy, but Amalfi Coast is a different story. This is the tour we book from Sorrento to Amalfi Coast. they have a free cancellation and you can see all three cities traveling with a van. Check the availability and prices here.
Best Tour from Sorrento To Amalfi Coast
We also tried another fun tour this time and I highly recommend it if you’re traveling to Amalfi Coast during summer. In summer the roads are very crowded and we try to avoid driving to Amalfi Coast, as you can easily get stocked in the traffic hours long.
The best way to go from Sorrento to Amalfi Coast during summer is by ferry. But if you’re time is limited, ferries might take a lot of time, if you want to visit more than one city in Amalfi Coast and can be expensive. So we took a boat tour from Sorrento to Amalfi Coast this time and it was fantastic.
Even the views are more picturesque from the water and you skip the traffic. You can also swim in the middle of the sea, which was another great experience. It’s just a bit more expensive than the van tour. We highly recommend it specially for the honeymooners or couples. Here is the one we booked with Getyourguide.
Other ways to Get from Sorrento to Amalfi Coast
Sorrento to Positano or Amalfi by bus:
You can Take the SITA bus (local bus) from Sorrento to Positano or Amalfi town. From Sorrento to Positano is about takes about 40 minutes, when no traffic. From Positano to Amalfi town is another 40 minutes.
Tickets are cheap (under €5), but buses can be crowded, especially in summer. If you like to take beautiful photos, Sit on the right side of the bus for the best scenic views.
Sorrento to Positano or Amalfi by Ferry:
Ferries leave from Marina Piccola. The Ferry from Sorrento to Positano is about 45 minutes and costs around 15-20 Euros one-way. You can book the tickets online in advance and we recommend to book the early in the high-season.
You can also get the ferry directly to Amalfi Town from Sorrento. That one takes around 1 hour and 30 minutes depending on the ferry type. But we recommend to get the fast tracks to save your time. Although the views are so beautiful, that you won’t even feel the time. Tickets are around 20 Euros on-way depends on your ticket type. You can book your tickets here.
Sorrento to Amalfi Coast by Car:
We love to drive this beautiful road with a private car. You can drive from Sorrento to Amalfi Coast by car and take a break in all these picturesque towns along the coast. The only downside of it, is that it’s a lot of traffic during summer time, so we take the ferry in the summer months.
Driving from Sorrento to Positano takes around 30 minutes and from Positano to Amalfi town about 25 minutes (depending on traffic).
Pro Tip: There are plenty of Parkings in Positano and Amalfi town but a bit pricy. About 10 Euros/hour with the minimum of 3 hours per city.
6. Take photos at the Belvedere di Sorrento
Belvedere di Sorrento is one of the best look-outs in Sorrento. If you want to take the best Panoramic view of Sorrento, this is the best photo spot. Our favorite time to visit is at the sunset or at sunrise. It’s also around the Villa Comunale and you can easily walk there.
On clear days you can even see Capri island. It’s basically a terrace above Marina Piccola and marina Grande.
Pro Tip: This spot is magical at sunrise and sunset. If you’re a photographer like us, you can get fantastic pics from this dreamy view. The setting sun reflects off the water and the view is jaw-dropping.
7. Lemon farm Tour and Limoncello Tasting
Visiting a lemon farm is always on our list of activities when visiting southern Italy. You’ll love it and will have so much fun. It’s a kind of activity for any kind of travelers, solo travelers, couples, seniors and travelers with kids. Also Sorrento is famous for it’s lemon trees and limoncellos.
Also you can get the best home-made Limoncello directly at the farms. Some farms also have olive trees and kids can also feed the animals. The best way to get to the farms, is to book a lemon farm tour with limoncello tasting + Olive oil tasting.
Best Lemon Farms In Sorrento
Our favorite farms to visit in Sorrento are:
- La Masseria Farm which is an organic lemon farm. We love it, because they also have olives and you can also pick up your own lemons. Also if you’re traveling to Sorrento with kids, they can feed the animals there as wel.
- La Limonaia Farm is another great one and it’s directly in the city. SO you don’t have to even drive out of the town. They also have great cooking classes and we recommend couples to do that. It’s such a fun experience. They also have an onsite restaurants where you can dine below the lemon trees.
Best Lemon Farm tours in Sorrento
We always take the one from Viator with food experience including Olive Oil, Limoncello and wine tasting. It’s a half day tour and costs $150. It’s one of the best tours you can ever take.
We visited the La Masseria farm which is a family farm with four generations of history. You will take different products for free. Also it’s written light lunch, but believe me it’s so much food and drink. Also seeing the lemon and olive trees and picking up your own lemon is wonderful. We highly recommend it.
Best Time to visit lemon farms in Sorrento
The best time to walk among lemon groves and taste the home-made limoncello is from April to September. Yes.. the Lemon trees in Sorrento have also fruits in spring time, because the weather is mild. But the harvest time is in August and September.
Best Limoncello in Sorrento
We love the homemade limoncello. You can buy it directly at the farms or at some local shops.
If you don’t want to take a full-day tour, visit Giardini di Cataldo in Sorrento downtown (Via Correale, 27 which is a short walk form Piazza Tasso). This beautiful lemon garden offers a free tour in their limoncello factory and a walk through their lemon garden. We love their home-made limoncello.
8. Hike the Path of the Gods (Il Sentiero degli Dei)
This is one of the best things to do in Sorrento for hikers and nature lovers. This is the most scenic hike I’ve ever had in my life and believe me I was in Switzerland, Alps and Banff. But this is so different.
Is Path of Gods hike worth it? Yes, just imagine epic, colorful villages and that bluish water. The name isn’t an exaggeration – once you’re up in the trail, you’ll truly get the reason, why they call it the Path of the Gods.
This beautiful trail goes along the Amalfi Coast. It takes around 4-5 hours and the best path is to start from Bomerano and to end in Nocelle in Positano. It’s not a very difficult hike but has some uneven areas. So you definitely need good hiking shoes, water, sunglasses and a hat.
How to reach the Path of The Gods from Sorrento:
From Sorrento take the Circumversuviana train to Castellammare di Stabia, then a bus up to Bomerano which is the easiest starting point. Another option is to take a bus or ferry to Positano, then hike uphill from Nocelle, but it’s very steep and we don’t recommend it.
The views are Jaw-dropping and although the hike is a bit difficult, it’s definitely worth it. There are also some guided tours to do the hike and if you’re a solo traveler girl, we recommend to get the guided tour.
Although we’re a couple, we booked the tour this time, and I must say it was so much fun and we really enjoyed to do it in a group. You’ll also get trekking poles. Here is the one we booked. Check the availability and prices here!
Pro Tip: The most famous viewpoint is called “Terrace of the Gods”. Although you have to experience it yourself, just imagine having the Capri in the distance and Positano further down the coast. It’s the most beautiful hike, I’ve ever had.

9. The Vallone dei Mulini (Valley of the Mills)
Visiting Vallone dei Mulini (Valley of the Mills) is another amazing thing to do in Sorrento. This is certainly another Hidden Gem in Sorrento, which is an abandoned flour mill overgrown with greenery, right in the center of town. It’s located just a short walk behind Piazza Tasso in the heart of Sorrento.
Originally it dates back approximately 35,000 -39,000 years, carved by ancient volcanic debris from the Campi Flegrei. While you cannot enter the valley as it’s a private property, you can peer down into this sunken world and take some amazing shots.

10. Take a day-trip to Pompeii
You can easily visit the ancient ruins of Pompeii from Sorrento. I had a doubt at the beginning if I really want to sea how people died under the Volcan attack. But then I did it last year, and it’s more than that. It’s a history that goes back to 2,000 years ago and how people lived at that time.
Is Pompeii worth a visit? Yessss, it’s definitely worth a visit. We loved Pompeii and it’s not just about history, because that place is beautiful even if you just walk there, you’ll love it. I would say skipping it would be a big mistake.
How to Get from Sorrento to Pompeii by train
The simplest way to get from Sorrento to Pompeii is by train. You can just take the Circumvesuviana train from Sorrento Station towards Pompeii. The ride is about 30 minutes to Pompei Scavi – Villa dei Misteri station, which drops you right at the entrance of the ruins.
Trains run frequently (about every 30 minutes), and tickets are cheap (around €2.80). You can buy the train tickets online or at the ticket office. (we always buy the tickets at the ticket office).
How to buy the tickets for Pompeii
We definitely recommend to buy the tickets for Pompeii online, specially during the high-season. Also buy them longer in advance, because they sell out fast. During summer months, we also suggest skip-the-line tickets, because it’s hot and you might need to wait long in the queues to enter.

What is the best month to visit Pompei?
We visited Pompeii at the end of August and it was mild. But last time I visited Pompeii it was in July and it was hot, and you’re basically walking the whole time outside under the sun. So we recommend to visit Pompeii from April-June and also from the last week of August till the end of November.
Tips for visiting Pompeii
You can’t bring large backpacks in Pompeii, so make sure your bag is not very big. Also I highly recommend to take a water bottle and there are fountains there to refill, specially during summer months. I would also take a hat and sunglasses along with your comfy shoes.

Top Restaurants in Sorrento
Actually restaurants in Sorrento deserve their own post, but to have all the details you need for a great visit there, we’ve put our top favorite restaurants in Sorrento together. So here are the most delicious ones:
$$$$$ Il Buco: For fine dining in Sorrento, one of my favorite places. It’s a Michelin-starred cave-like-dining with inventive tasting menus and flawless atmosphere. I recommend booking in advance.
$$$$$ Ristorante Museo Caruso: Another fine-dining experience with an extraordinary flavour. It’s located in Enrico Caruso’s former villa. It’s elegant, artsy and refined cuisine for a special night out.
$$$ Storico8 Pizza: No wonder it has 4.9 in google reviews. You just have to try the eggplant parm sandwich and their gnocchi Sorrento piccant. It’s the best gnocchi I’ve ever had.
$$ La Vantinaccia del Popolo / La Trattoria: Another great option. It’s an italian gem located in the heart of Sorrento at Vico Terzo Rota. If you ask me, I’ve had my best Ravioli there. It’s authentic and affordable. It’s also a good place to go as a family with kids.
Travel Tips for visiting Sorrento
How many days in Sorrento is enough?
Well, that depends on you and what you want to do. If you want to visit Amalfi Coast, while staying in Sorrento, we recommend at least 5 days in Sorrento. But if you only want to visit Sorrento and Capri, you can definitely make it in 3 days.
If you only give yourself a day, you’ll end up rushing through and missing the charm that comes from lingering. For most travelers, I’d say 3-5 nights is the sweet spot. That gives you enough time to enjoy Sorrento itself — the beaches, lemon farms, and incredible food. Also you can do day-tours to the most beautiful coast in Italy, The Amalfi Coast.
What is the best month to visit Sorrento?
The Best time to visit Sorrento is from May till the end of October. I just found August too hot, but the rest is fantastic. Also Shoulder months are perfect for enjoying the warm weather without the crowd.
In May and June, the lemon groves are in full bloom, the days are long and sunny, and the sea is finally warm enough for a swim. The town feels alive but not overwhelming. It’s that perfect balance between good weather and manageable crowds.
Then there’s September and October, which is my favorite time of the year. Not touristy, not too hot and you can finally enjoy the Amalfi Coast in a more relaxed way.

Is Sorrento very expensive?
Not compared to Positano or Amalfi. I found Sorrento much cheaper than the other southern towns in the Amalfi Coast or Sicily. What I love about Sorrento is that you can find fabulous trattorias and pizzerias serving delicious meals at local prices.
But at the same time, there are enough upscale restaurants with sea views where for the luxury travelers.
Is Sorrento Safe?
Generally it’s a safe city, but you should always watch for pickpockets in busy areas. If you’re using taxis, be sure that they are using their Taximeters. We normally use our google map to make sure they are not going the longer ways.

Let’s answer the most popular question about Sorrento and Amalfi. I’ve often been asked whether it’s better to stay in Sorrento or Amalfi, and honestly, the two places have very different personalities.
Sorrento is bigger, with plenty of restaurants, shops, and easy connections to Pompeii, Capri, and the Amalfi Coast.
I loved having so many options right at my doorstep. It’s practical, lively, and has that classic cliffside charm with views over the Bay of Naples and Mount Vesuvius. It’s more affordable than Amalfi or Positano.
Amalfi and Positano, on the other hand, are smaller and more romantic with slower pace. It feels more intimate, but also more limited — fewer hotels, fewer transport links, and higher prices. But I also stayed in Amalfi the first time I visited that area.
Because I wanted to wake up right in the heart of the Amalfi Coast with those pastel villages and coastal views. If this is your dream, then you might need to pay a little bit more and book a hotel there.
Personally, I loved staying in Sorrento and visiting Amalfi on a day trip — that way I got the best of both worlds.
Fun Things to do in Sorrento for Couples
There are so many things to do in southern Italy, but newly, we found a fantastic fun thing that we did in Sorrento and we highly recommend it for couples. The Lemon Farms have also cooking classes and since we stayed a bit longer in Sorrento this time, we’ve decided to try one.
And I must say that we had so much fun, besides you’ll learn how to cook like a local Italian Mama. Here is the cooking class in Sorrento, we took and it was outside with a stunning view of the sea.
Sorrento is famous for fresh pasta, seafood, and of course lemons. That’s why I joined a cooking class in Sorrento, and not only did I roll gnocchi by hand which was so much fun, but I also sipped homemade limoncello made by my host’s grandmother.
