Where to stay: If you’re visiting Porto for the first time, it’s helpful to know that the river that goes along the city is called Douro and is one of the most beautiful rivers, we’ve ever seen. Although most of the first-timers book their hotels in the downtown, we highly recommend to book your hotel along the Douro.
Best Hotels: Porto is a small city and is very good walkable. Yes, it’s hilly but if you can’t walk up, you can easily get the lift up on the hill to the .downtown from Douro. Our favorite hotels are Hotel Eurostar (Douro) and Hotel Vincci (you have to book early). Check the prices and availabilities here.
Best Day-Trips: Also if you’re already in Porto, don’t miss the day-trips to Braga, Bom Jesus and Guimaraes. They are wonderful cities and you can pack them all in one day-trip. 1-Things to do in Ribeira District
This is the most beautiful district in Porto. We love to just walk there, along the river during sunset, sunrise and whenever we can! Yesss, you’ll never get bored. To put it in words, just imagine wine boats, colorful but simple buildings, the picturesque Port Bridge along the Douro River.
Moreover, It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the city’s most iconic area. Also Ribeira is the downtown of Porto Portugal, so most of the historical buildings, shopping centers and tourist attractions are in this district.
Although Porto might look small, when you first arrive there, but believe me this city has so much to offer. We personally love Porto more than Lisbon, because of it’s coziness and artistic flair.
Top things to do in Ribeira
Enjoy the Promenade at Douro River
We can sit in one of those restaurants with a wine in your hand and just watch the boats passing by for hours. Also there are always lots of street artists along the river, that make it even more lively.
I would say, just enjoy the scenic walk along Douro river, specially at sunset or at night. Because this part of the city comes to life at night. Have a glass of wine with a bacalhau dish (Portugal’s traditional dish) at Terra Nova Restaurants and believe me you’ll love it!
Take a 6 Bridges Boat Tour
I remember the first time we took this tour, OMG…. it was so stunning, as it was at the sunset. Try to take the tour at sunset, as it’s normally more quiet and more scenic. You actually don’t need to book it advance.
We normally just go there and get the ticket You can take the boat from Ribeira or from Gaia (the other side of the river). Although we found the prices much cheaper on the Gaia rather than Ribeira side.
Snap Photos of the Dom Luís Bridge
I know you might think that’s just a bridge, but it’s more than that. I haven’t seen any bridge as scenic as the Dom Luis Bridge in Porto Portugal. It’s definitely one of our favorite photography spots. No matter if you’re walking on the lower floor or on the top floor.
Explore the Time-out Market
We love the Time-Out Market in Porto and we tried several dishes. They are all good and if you love fish, you should definitely try the stall Rafa Louzada Wander through the Time-out market and enjoy the dishes while sitting outside in the middle of this beautiful area.

Visit Praça da Ribeira
This lively square is the heart of the neighborhood. It’s usually filled with locals and tourists hanging out, playing music, or just enjoying the sunshine. Great for a quick snack, a drink, or just chilling for a bit.
Ride the Funicular dos Guindais
Take the funicular from the Ribeira riverside up to Batalha — We love that ride. It costs 4 Euro/Person, but it’s worth to try it once at least. Although it’s a short ride, but it’s scenic. It offers you a great view of the river and rooftops. Bonus: you’ll land near some more local spots like São Bento Station and Sé Cathedral.

There are some amazing local-ledtours that start in Ribeira and explore the history, food, and secret corners of Porto. We did that on our first visit to Porto and we loved it. For the first-timers, I recommend to book this fantastic tour.
Dom Luís I Bridge
One of Ribeira’s most striking landmarks is the Dom Luís I Bridge, an architectural marvel that connects Porto’s Ribeira district to Vila Nova de Gaia on the other side of the Douro River. Designed by a student of Gustave Eiffel (yep, that Eiffel), this double-deck iron bridge has become a symbol of the city.
Walking across the top level is a must-do experience. You’ll be sharing the path with Porto’s light rail line, but don’t worry, because there’s a safe pedestrian walkway that offers panoramic views of the river, the terracotta rooftops of Ribeira, and the wine cellars of Gaia. It’s especially breathtaking at sunset when the city is bathed in golden light.
Tip: If you’re a content creator or just love beautiful visuals, this spot is perfect for long-exposure photography, or epic Instagram shots. We love this spot for Photography and videography for it’s soft curves of the river, and the historic buildings.
Also don’t forget to walk over to the Miradouro da Serra do Pilar right after crossing — it’s one of the best viewpoints in Porto and a great place to relax with a view of the entire Ribeira waterfront. (See above)
Livraria Lello
In my opinion the most beautiful Bookstore in the world. Harry Potter fans will especially love it — rumor has it J.K. Rowling was inspired by its dreamy design. Yes it’s crowded, but if you have your ticket and show up on-time, you don’t have to wait long.
Tip: You can buy your tickets only online, I suggest 12pm or 5 pm if you want the library with less crowd.
Clérigos Tower
If you can, climb 225 steps to enjoy one of the best panoramic views of Porto’s historic center. You’ll love the view from there.
São Bento Train Station
Although it actually looks like a palace, but it’s Porto’s central station. Prepare yourself for a place full of photographers and videographers. Even if you’re not catching a train, stop by to admire its 20,000+ blue and white azulejo tiles depicting scenes from Portuguese history.
Palácio da Bolsa
A 19th-century neoclassical building with grand interiors, including the breathtaking Arabian Room. Guided tours are available daily.
One of my favorite tours is the one with a Classic Ford T in a private tour. Porto is on the hill, so if you don’t feel comfortable to go up and down, you can also take a private tour with one of these beautiful cars.
2-Things to do in Gaia District
While Ribeira gets a lot of the spotlight, Gaia, just across the Dom Luís I Bridge is a true hidden gem that deserves just as much love. It’s famous for Port wine, epic views, and a slower, more local vibe.
Pro Tip: We love to stay in Gaia more than Ribeira. Although it’s a bit farther from downtown, but it’s where locals live. Also the restaurants are much cheaper with a higher quality. Here are 3 must-visit places to visit in Gaia, Porto.
Wine Tasting in the Historic Port Cellars
Gaia is the heart of Portugal’s Port wine industry — and yes, this is where all those famous wine cellars are located! You’ll find legendary names like Sandeman, Taylor’s, Graham’s, and Ferreira, each offering tours, tastings, and gorgeous terrace views over the river.
Even if you’re not a wine expert, the guides make it super fun and easy to follow. You’ll learn how Port is made, get a peek into the massive wine barrels, and of course — sample a few different styles.
Pro tip: try the tawny Port with a cheese board. It’s so good. We also loved the Pastel De Bacalhau shop in Gaia. It’s a Wonka feeling. They also have live Piano concerts every once a while, where you can sit upstairs and enjoy the atmosphere while eating the Pastel de Bacalhau.
Catch the Sunset from Jardim do Morro
Right at the end of the Dom Luís I Bridge (upper level), you’ll find Jardim do Morro, a hilltop park with one of the best sunset views in all of Porto. It’s a favorite hangout for locals and travelers alike, especially in the golden hour.
Bring a drink, grab a spot on the grass, and enjoy live music from street performers as the sky turns orange and the city lights begin to twinkle. It’s also a fantastic photo spot — you can capture Ribeira, the bridge, and the Douro in one dreamy shot.
Best Photography spot: Climb up to Monastery Serra do Pilar. That’s where you can have the best spots of Porto. If you want to get a sunset shot, you have to be there a bit earlier, as all the spots are fully packed.
Ride the Gaia Cable Car (Teleférico de Gaia)
If you’re looking for something fun and a little different, hop on the Gaia Cable Car for a short but scenic ride from Jardim do Morro down to the riverside promenade. We love to ride it on a sunny day and you can get amazing shots from above.
Also the views over the rooftops and wine cellars are incredible, and it’s a cool way to get a bird’s-eye perspective of both Gaia and Porto.
At the bottom, you’ll land right along the waterfront is also a lovely area full of wine bars, market stalls, and cafés. It’s the perfect place to unwind and sip something sweet after your ride.

I love the view at the Miradouro da Vitoria. Although it’s one of the best free viewpoints in Porto (Ribeira), but it’s often missed by tourists, as it’s a bit hidden. It’s Quiet, beautiful, and Instagram-worthy. So don’t miss that beautiful spot, and you can see the spot in the map below.
Best Tours & Unique Experiences
If you are a first-timer or you’re in Porto just for few days, we recommend taking tours, as they are much easier and faster than traveling with trains. Specially if you’re visiting the villages around Porto, as the tours are sometimes cheaper than the multiple train tickets and the the entrance costs of the attractions.

It only takes 45 minutes and it starts in Gaia. Our favorite timing is for sunset or 10 in the morning, before it gets hot. It offers a stunning view of the six bridges and the city.

If you’re planning a trip to Porto and want to experience more of northern Portugal, which is truly beautiful, you’re in luck. There are so many charming towns and breathtaking spots just a short ride away.
These are our personal favorite day trips from Porto — all easy to reach by train or Uber or tours, depending on your vibe that day.
Day Trip to the Douro Valley & Wine tasting
Wine, river views, and rolling hills – if this is your vibe, then you should go for this tour. A Douro Valley tour is a must for anyone visiting Porto.
This UNESCO World Heritage Site is famous for its terraced vineyards, rolling hills, and the serene Douro River winding through the valley. On a guided tour, you’ll visit traditional quintas to taste exceptional Port and regional wines, enjoy authentic Portuguese cuisine, and even take a relaxing cruise on a traditional rabelo boat.
Guimarães – The Birthplace of Portugal
This is the most underrated city in northern Portugal. This is an absolute fairytale city that you don’t want to leave. This UNESCO-listed medieval town is full of cobbled streets, charming squares, and a gorgeous castle that whispers stories from the 10th century.
How to get there: Take a train from São Bento or Campanhã stations (about 1 hr 15 min), or hop in an Uber (around €35–€45, 45 mins).
Pro Tip: Take a day trip tour for Guimaraes, Braga and Bom Jesus.
Braga – Baroque Beauty and Bom Jesus
Braga is another cute fairytale city which is just an hour ride from Porto. It’s also one of Portugal’s oldest cities, bursting with beautiful churches and lively cafés. Don’t miss the Bom Jesus do Monte sanctuary with its stunning staircase and hilltop views.
How to get there: Direct train from Porto Campanhã takes just over an hour. Uber is quicker (around 45 mins) and costs about €30–€40, or as above mentioned, you can just book a tour for Braga and Guimaraes together.
Aveiro – The Venice of Portugal
This small beautiful city is a petite version of Venice and you can easily see the whole city in a half day trip from Porto. It’s totally worth a visit.
Colorful boats, Art Nouveau buildings, and sweet ovos moles treats — Aveiro is the perfect combo of chill and charm.
How to get there: Just hop on a direct train from Porto (about 1 hour). Uber is around €45 and takes a bit less time, or you can get a tour, although I would just take a train to go there.

A meat-lover’s dream: layered sandwich with steak, ham, sausage, cheese, and spicy beer sauce. Best eaten with fries and a cold beer.

Where to Stay in Porto & Best Hotels
Ribeira:
For first-time visitors who want river views and easy access to top sights, this part of the city might be a good option, although it’s not our favorite part as it’s very crowded during summer months. It’s very touristic and it’s hard to find a quite hotel.
But if you are looking for hotels with view, these two hotels are our favorites in Ribeiro with stunning picture of Duero River.
Hotels: Pestana Douro Riverside, Eurostar Douro Hotel
Gaia:
This is our favorite part of the city to stay, which has the full view of Duero River but it’s cheaper and you can easily walk down the bridge to go to downtown.
Also it’s ideal for wine lovers and romantic views of Porto’s skyline.
Hotels: Vincci Ponte de Ferro (our favorite): This is our favorite hotel in Porto, not only because of his amazing view and modern architecture, but also it offers the exit both for the first level and the 2nd level of the bridge. Check the availability and the prices here.
Cedofeita:
This part of the town is very trendy and artsy, great for those who want local vibes and indie shops. It’s not that touristic but you also don’t have the view of the river. Our favorite hotel in this part of the city is the Hotel Casa do Conto. You can check the details and availability here.
How to Get Around Porto
- Walking: Porto is very walkable city, though hilly. You need some to pack your comfortable shoes.
- Metro: Efficient and affordable. If you buy a Porto Card, you can also use it for Metro.
- Trams: Fun and historic — try Line 1 to Foz do Douro. It’s so beautiful.
- Taxis/Bolt/Uber/Tuktuk: We went to Aveiro with uber and it’s cheap in Portugal. Tuktuks are a bit expensive so I would double check the price. Taxis are also available and cheaper than many other European cities.
Best Time to Visit Porto
- Spring (March–May): We normally go to Porto between March and May. The Weather is mild, fewer crowds and perfect for exploring on foot.
- Summer (June–August): Sunny and lively, but more tourists and sometimes it’s just too hot for walking tours.
- Fall (Sept–Oct): Warm days, harvest season in the Douro Valley, It’s a beautiful season and very recommendable. Specially for wine lovers.
- Winter (Nov–Feb): Quiet, cozy, and good for budget travelers. It’s just a bit cold through the ocean wind. So it’s different than Lisbon and don’t expect warm weather during those months.

Local Tips & Etiquette
- Language: Portuguese is spoken, but English is widely understood in tourist areas.
- Tipping: 5–10% is appreciated, but not mandatory.
- Safety: Porto is a very safe city. We never had a problem there and we normally carry two profi cameras and many other stuff, but of course like everywhere else it’s recommended to take care of your personal items.
- Dress code: Casual is fine, but locals are stylish. Bring layers — the weather changes fast, due to the ocean’s wind.
- Pro Tip: If you’re a runner, bring some sport cloths with you, as you can get jealous of people who are running along the river all morning.
