There are so many events and light shows with lots of new programs. We love to visit Niagara Falls in winter time, as it’s very entertaining and I love it even more than the summer time.

It’s not just about watching the frozen Niagara Falls and rivers around the Niagara falls, but it’s less crowded and so festive. Also winter in Niagara Falls offers extraordinary views, that you’ll never get during otherwinter months.

Why to Visit Niagara Falls in Winter

Niagara Falls winter travel is best for those who likes extraordinary scenic views with fewer crowd. Also I recommend it for as a romantic getaway for couples, as the hotel prices are also much lower than the other months.

It’s definitely the best time to travel for unique views, photography, and quieter travel. While some activities like boat ride to falls, might be closed for the season, but there are lots of winter activities in Niagara Falls for indoor and outdoor entertainment. Also the Niagara Falls winter festival of lights is one of our favorites.

Niagara Falls Frozen

Although you might have seen the pictures of the Frozen Niagara Falls very often, but the Horseshoe Falls which is the main Falls of the Niagara Falls, does not actually freeze. Even in the coldest winter months, only the mist and spray around it freezes. So it makes a kind of a crust of ice over the top of the falls that looks frozen, but the water continues to flow underneath the sheets of ice.

While a Frozen Niagara falls (Horseshoe Falls), happened only partially, but the American Falls appear to be more frozen, because it’s much smaller with less amount of water flowing down. But it also makes a fantastic picture during the winter months.

How is the Weather in Winter in Niagara Falls

So in winter months, specially at the end of January and February, Everything around the falls, including railings, rocks, trees, walkways and even the water down the fall freezes and make a beautiful view of the Niagara Falls in winter.

You should imagine that Niagara Falls is generating constant mist and what makes it feels colder, is the icy wind that comes towards observations points. That’s why we suggest to check the temperatures and visit Niagara Falls in winter on sunny days with less wind to be able to walk around the falls.

Pro Tip: If you already planned your trip to the falls and the weather is not as good as expected, don’t worry because you can almost always take a short walk outside and then enjoy the views from the Table Rock Restaurant or Terrapin Point Niagara Falls.

Niagara Falls in December

As you can imagine December in Niagara Falls is truly magical. The Festival of Light in Niagara Falls starts in mid-November and also there are several events during Christmas time in Niagara Falls. We’ll talk about all the events below. Also the weather is milder than January or February.

History of Niagara falls

I found it fascinating the first time I visited this extraordinary falls and wanted to know the history behind it. So for those who are like me, here is a short history of Niagara Falls. Niagara Falls was formed over 12,000 years ago at the end of the last ice age.

Apparently the melting glaciers created the great lakes and the Niagara river. So that gradually carved the waterfalls through constant erosion. Also it was home to indigenous people and first in 19th century it became one of the major tourist attractions in North America.

Later with the development of the hydroelectric power, the cities shaped on both sides of Niagara Falls in Canada and U.S. This source of power has two waterfalls: – Horseshoe Falls which is the main huge falls and American Falls which is the smaller one on the U.S. side.

Niagara Falls Canada vs. Niagara Falls New York

We stayed on both sides of the falls and definitely Niagara Falls Canada offers much better views and more winter activities. If you’re visiting Niagara Falls as a first-timer, we recommend to stay at the Canadian side with more attractions, better hotels. Also it offers more Restaurants and better views.

Fallsview Boulevard Niagara Falls on the Canadian side offers great hotels and restaurants that are directly connected indoor. That’s why you’ll have more entertainment options, when temperatures drop below freezing.

Marriott Niagara Falls, Fallsview

If you’re looking for a hotel with a Fallsview, spacious rooms and in-house restaurant, we almost always stay at the Marriott Niagara Falls Fallsview hotel.

It’s the closest to the Table Rock House and Horseshoe Falls with a fantastic view. When booking ask for a higher floors. We normally book the Double Room with Falls View. Check the availability and prices here.

How is Niagara Falls U.S. Side

Winter in Niagara Falls U.S. is definitely quieter and better for those of you who love to do more outdoor activities around the falls. We love it mostly in summer and Fall, because we can walk down at the State Park, around the American Falls and Bridal Viel Falls.

The State Park is open all-year-round and is really beautiful, but you won’t be having a full view of the falls from the U.S. Side. Also the indoor activities are limited.

Pro Tip: We recommend the Canada Side of Niagara Falls in winter, because of a better view of the falls and more indoor activities. That’s why we will mostly talk about the best things to do in the Canadian Side, but we’ll also cover some of the activities on the U.S. side.

Things to Do in Niagara Falls in Winter

Niagara falls Canada winter activities are definitely more than the winter activities on the U.S. side. It’s also more comfortable for the visitors during winter for it’s indoor facilities and walkways.

We also the U.S. side, but specially in summer where you can walk along the trails and enjoy the outdoor activities. Here are our favorite things to do in Niagara Falls in winter.

1- Visit Niagara Falls Table Rock House

Of course the best way to walk along the Niagara Falls railing and enjoying the view is through the Table Rock House. This is your gateway indoor space to go from the Parking to the sidewalks of Niagara Falls.

Table Rock Centre sits directly beside the Horseshoe Falls (which is the biggest part of the Falls). Horseshoe Falls is the closest you can safely get to the water. In winter, the mist freezes onto the rocks and makes an unreal jaw-dropping view.

Also another great thing to do in Niagara Falls, is to take a walk along the Queen Victoria Park. It stretches along the river and you can take photos from all 3 falls along the way. We definitely love to spend hours there, if temperatures allow.

Do You Need A Ticket To Visit The Falls

No, you don’t need a ticket, reservation, or schedule. Because visiting the falls is completely free.

Table Rock House Restaurant

My Favorite Restaurant with the closest View of the Falls is the Table Rock House Restaurant. We love to sit there hours by the window and enjoy their fantastic cuisine. I normally get the steak with fries or the burger.

Pro Tip: book online in advance and go early. They open at 11:30am and we’re normally standing there from 11:20am to get the best tables by the window. Believe me it’s worth it.

2- Visit Journey Behind the Falls

One of the best things to do in Niagara Falls in winter, is to visit the Horseshoe Falls through tunnels carved right into the rock. I can’t tell you how many times, I did that and I’m totally obsessed with standing so close to this powerful source of energy. So it’s definitely a must-do for visitors who want more than just a photo with the falls.

Is Journey Behind the Falls open in winter?

Yes, it’s open year-round except for Christmas Day and in winter the upper viewing deck behind the falls remains open, but the lower observation deck is often closed, if the temperatures drop down.

It’s open daily from 9am – 6pm. Please check the official website of Niagara Parks for seasonal opening hours. We highly suggest to arrive early for a better experience, specially if you want to take photos. Even during winter time, many are traveling to Niagara Falls and afternoons can be crowded too.

Journey Behind the falls Tickets

The Admission is C$28.00 for adults and C$18.50 for children (3-12 years). You can directly book the journey behind the falls tickets online on the official website or at the entrance inside the Table Rock House Centre. To visit Niagara Falls in winter, you normally don’t need to book the tickets online, as it’s not that crowded.

Practical Tips

• The Journey takes about 1 hour depending on how long you want to spend outside to take the pictures and enjoy the views.
• Although you’ll get a waterproof poncho at the entrance, but we recommend to wear waterproof boots with good traction as the paths can be icy.
• Also warm layers are recommended and warm hat and gloves are a must to make your journey more enjoyable.

3. Niagara Falls at Night (Illumination)

One of my favorite things to do in Niagara Falls in winter is to just sit and watch the falls at night. And that’s because the falls are illuminated all-year-round after the sunset. So in winter the light reflects off ice and snow, which makes it even more beautiful. We made fantastic photos from Niagara Falls at night and that’s why a Hotel with Falls View is a must if you’re budget allows.

If not too cold, you can even take a walk at night along the Fallsview Boulvard or Queen Victoria Park. I must say that we were sometimes surprised by the weather, as nights can be even more pleasant than the days. You just have to give it a try.

4- Visit Niagara Takes Flight

Niagara Takes Flight is definitely a new way to see Niagara Falls. And do not underestimate it, because I fist thought it’s something for the kids. And that’s true they will love it, but we loved it too as adults, because it’s just so real.

What is Niagara Takes Flight

This newly opened flying theatre attraction is actually a huge domed screen with sensory effects like wind, mist, and even scent that simulate the feeling of free flight over the Niagara Falls and believe me it’s so cool! We loved it so much.

While you’re sitting comfortably in a gondola-style-seat that moves gently, you’re gliding above the whole area and enjoying the views of the Niagara River and the fantastic view of Horseshoe Falls from above and as close as you can.

How to Book the Tickets for Niagara Takes Flight

the Theatre is located at the Table Rock Welcome Centre and it’s right at the beginning. They are open daily from 10am and we paid C$37/person. You can book the tickets on their official website here.

Before the “flight”, you’ll go through a series of themed rooms. The Ancestors Room shows you the history of the indigenous sorties, the Waterfall Room talks about the history of the Fall and how the Falls formed.

The next room is the Transporter Room that prepares you for the adventure and how it was made. It’s such a great experience and we quite enjoyed it.

5-Power Station At Night

Another fantastic new activity at Niagara Falls is to visit the Power Station at Night. Surely Power Station should be definitely on your list of activities when visiting Niagara Falls in winter, but visiting it at night is definitely another experience.

What is the Power Station

Niagara Parks Power Station is actually the historic power plant located at the Canadian Side of Niagara Falls. It’s located at the south of Horseshoe Falls. The station was built in early 1900s. Also it’s fascinating how the falls were generating the electricity of the household and industries in Ontario till 2006.

Although this amazing historical power station is decommissioned in 2006, but it should definitely be on your bucket list. And that’s not only for the history behind it, but the view of the Niagara Falls at Night from the Station is jaw-dropping.

Pro Tip: The Power Station at Night is only open during the week and it’s closed on Saturday and Sunday. Also we recommend to wear comfortable shoes and warm jacket. You’ll walk through the tunnel and around the halls for about an hour.

6. Niagara Falls Festival Of Lights

The Niagara Falls Festival of lights is normally between November 15th till January 4th. But check the exact dates for 2026 on theirofficial website here. If you’re visiting Niagara Falls in winter, you’ll see millions of lights along the Niagara Parkway. It goes through Dufferin Islands and even in Clifton Hill.

It’s breathtaking and we visit the festival of lights in Niagara Falls almost every year (mostly in December). We love to take a walk along the 8km route with over 3 million twinkling lights spread across the Niagara Falls. Also the highlight is that there are Fireworks on every Friday & Saturday at 8pm through the Festival time.

You can also drive part of the route and just walk the park near Table Rock or Clifton Hill to enjoy the displays. Also there’s a fantastic Laser show at Queen Victoria Park.

Where to get the tickets for Niagara Falls winter festival

Admission to the winter festival of lights is free and you don’t need any tickets. You can just walk around and if you want there is a donation spots where you can support the future displays.

Fallsview Casin Niagara Falls

Fallsview Casino Niagara is one of the best places to visit in Niagara Falls if you want entertainment, shopping, Casino and good restaurants.

It’s located in the downtown Niagara Falls and is just a step away from the Falls. We love to go there at night to take a walk and enjoy the dining options.

7. Take a walk through Butterfly Conservatory

One of the most magical places to visit at the Niagara falls in winter is Niagara Falls Butterfly Conservatory. This is our favorite indoor activity in Niagara Falls and no matter how many times I visit it, it’s always new to me.

Niagara falls Butterfly Conservatory Tickets

This conservatory is one of the largest glass-enclosed tropical houses in North America and it’s located in the Niagara parks Botanical Gardens. It has over 2,000 free-flying butterflies and it really feels magical. So it’s definitely worth a visit.

How to get the tickets

We always buy the tickets at the conservatory and it’s C$ 25 for Adults and C$16.50 for children. You can also buy the tickets online in advance. There’s no time slot for visiting the Conservatory.

Note: The Butterfly Conservatory is closed till February 8th this year, but you can visit the Floral Show house instead if you’re visiting the Niagara Falls in January.

8- Stroll through the Hot Chocolate Trail

For all those who have a sweet tooth like me, this is a must-visit, because it’s the most delicious activity in Niagara Falls in winter. We love to have a hot chocolate in the hand and stroll through the winter festival of lights.

There are 30 participating spots across Niagara Falls with more than 50 hot chocolate creations. Almost all the Cafes, restaurants and even some attractions are offering their own hot chocolate creation. You can easily download the map on your mobile to find out about the trail and which spots are offering it.

When is the Hot Chocolate Trail

The Hot Chocolate Trail normally runs from December to February 1st, with te Niagara Falls winter festival of lights in Ontario.

Pro Tip: we tried a lot and some of our favorite ones are: Lobby Bar at Marriot Fallsview with the view of the Falls, Table Rock Restaurant. The most instagrammable spot is the D Spot Dessert Cafe Niagara Falls, with their epic hot chocolate creations.

9- Fun Time at Clifton Hill in Winter

The most fun thing to do in Niagara Falls any time of the year is to visit the Clifton Hill. I can still remember the first time I visited Clifton Hills I thought I’m in a Hollywood film with all those bling bling and a true American story feeling.

Clifton Hill is the famous entertainment district in Niagara Falls and it should be definitely on your list of things to do in Niagara Falls in Winter. There are lots of attractions, indoor and outdoor, which makes it a perfect activity during winter. Also if you’re traveling to Niagara Falls with kids, this is the coolest place.

What to do in Clifton Hills

There’s so much to do in Clifton Hills, but these are our favorites activities:

• Arcade Games & Family Fun Centers: we go for bowling there and there are lots of racing simulators and VR games as well.
• Mini Golf with Indoor Options: It’s such a cool activity for couples or teens. They have fun themes like feature-glow-in-the-dark themed holes or some kind of imaginative options. So it’s more than just a classic Golf.
• Niagara Skywheel: We love to watch the panoramic views of the Niagara Falls from above and Niagara Skywheel is one of the best view of Niagara Falls. The Gondolas are fully heated, so don’t worry about freezing.
• Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Another fun thing to do with kids in Niagara Falls in winter, is to enjoy your time at Ripley’s Odditorium. You can learn, laugh and see some bizarre, fascinating exhibits.

Pro Tip: We highly recommend to get the Clifton Hill Fun Pass, if you want to try more than one attraction. Because it would be more affordable and much cheaper than paying for each separately. The fun pass costs C$34.95 for Adults and C$22.95 for children. You can book it directly on there official website.

Must-Try Restaurants in Clifton Hills

Actually Clifton Hills is full of restaurants and dining options, but we do have our favorites and here they are:

• Antica Pizzeria & Ristorante: we love their wood-fired pizzas and pastas there. Also the cozy atmosphere gives you exactly that Italian flair. It’s definitely our favorite Italian Restaurant in Niagara Falls.
• Niagara Distillery is another great spot on Clifton Hill, specially for those of you who like to have a fantastic steak with a locally crafted spirits. It’s an award-winning BBQ, so don’t forget to try one of those steaks or the juicy pulled pork sandwich.
• Rainforest Cafe is another favorite place to get a warm hotchocolate and enjoy the forest atmosphere. If you’re visiting Niagara Falls with kids, this is your place to go. And they also have warm dishes, but we normally just go for a drink and have a short break.

Note: you can also find lots of fast food options and to-go dining options around the Clifton hills.

10. Skylon Tower Viewpoint

Another great place for the best views o the Niagara Falls is the Skylon Tower. Also it’s not only a great place to take the best shots form the Horseshoe Falls, but also it’s one of our favorite dining options with view of the Falls.

You’ll have a panoramic view of the Horseshoe Falls, American Falls, and Bridal Veil Falls. If you’re lucky you might even see the Toronto’s Skyline on a clear day. You’ll take the Yellow Bug elevators from the lobby to the Observation deck in about 50 seconds and it’s such a great experience.

At the Observation desk, you’ll have the option of indoor & outdoor viewing with a 360° panoramic view. We highly recommend a romantic dining for the couples or first-time visitors at the revolving Dining room. We normally go there for the early dinner specials at 5pm, which is more affordable than the dinner options.

How to get the tickets for the Skylon Tower Niagara falls

The ride to the top with the Observation Decks is C$20 for adults and C$9 for the kids. You can book it online or at the Skylon. If you book the Revolving Dining Room, the visit to the Observation Decks are free.

Also we suggest to make a reservation in advance for the restaurant. The Restaurant is normally closed from January 15-30 the for the annual maintenance.

Embassy Suites by Hilton Niagara Falls

Another great hotel with Falls View is the Embassy Suites by Hilton Niagara Falls. We normally take the 2 Queen Bed Room with the view of both Falls on higher floors.

If you want to see the falls, make sure you choose the options from Floors 11-20. Rooms are spacious and lots of dining options around it. Check the prices and availability here.

11. Niagara Falls New Years

We’re normally staying in Canada for the New year and we love to stay overnight in one of the hotels in Niagara falls. Nothing beats that beautiful view of the falls at night with the fireworks over it. There are so many things to do at Niagara Falls New years and new year’s eve.

There are always different concerts and events in Niagara Falls New Year in winter. We normally stay at our hotel room for the new year and watch the panoramic view of the falls with the fireworks. Views are really jaw-dropping.

We always book the Queen Room-Superior Falls View at Niagara Falls Marriot Fallsview Hotel & Spa for the New Year, as it has one of the best views over the Horseshoe Falls. Make sure you book a room with Fallsview not a river view and you have to book early. Check the availability and prices here.

There are so many events and concerts in most of the hotels across the falls and also in the Casino Fallsview. If you’re staying at the Marriot Fallsview Hotel, there are special new year’s eve menu at the restaurant of the Marriot Falls View with a live music at the lobby bar with a panoramic view of the falls.

Getting to Niagara Falls: Go Train, Bus or Car

As said before, how you get to Niagara Falls depends on where you are coming from, and if you want to stay on the Canadian or U.S. side of Niagara Falls. But we definitely suggest to visit the Canadian side for the first-timers for better views and specially in winter for more entertainment options.

Since the closest airport to Niagara falls is the Toronto International Airport, we’ll start with that. Toronto to Niagara Falls

• By Car: You can drive from Toronto to Niagara Falls in around 1.5-2 hours depending on the traffic. We suggest to scape the rush hour, unless you can get stocked hours long in the traffic. There are plenty of public parking available at the Table Rock House, Fallsview Boulevard and Clifton Hill.
• Go Train to Niagara Falls is definitely another easy way to come from Toronto’s Union Station to Niagara Falls in around 2 hours with scenic views along the way.
• By Bus: The most budget friendly option is to get the Flixbus or Megabus Niagara Falls from Toronto. You can check the winter schedule here.

Getting to Niagara Falls, U.S.A

Visiting Niagara Falls, Canada is as easy as crossing the Rainbow bridge into Canada. The closest Airport in U.S. to reach the Niagara falls is Buffalo Niagara international Airport. And here the best ways to get from Buffalo to Niagara Falls:

How to get To Niagara Falls from Buffalo

We normally drive to Buffalo with a car and it’s around 40 minutes from Niagara Falls to Buffalo. But if you’re getting the public transport, you can either get the Flixbus, which drives daily 3-4 times from Buffalo to Niagara Falls or get the train from Amtrak Station. What to Wear in Niagara Falls in Winter

I know that a frozen Niagara Falls look so dreamy and like a wonderland on the screen, but the reality is definitely cold. So you’re spending a lot of money and to be able to enjoy the outdoor activities and the views, you need the appropriate cloths to keep you warm.

After traveling so many times to Niagara Falls from Toronto in different winter months, I’ll share my best practical tips for what to wear in Niagara Falls in winter. Trust me the -20°C with a wind chill is kind of a -30°C feeling.

But don’t get me wrong, it’s definitely a unique experience and totally worth it, if you’re dressing properly. So let’s dive in!

Layer Like A Pro

Winter Temperatures usually hover around -5°C to -23°C but wind chill can make it feel much colder. Also the spray freezes on your hands and your jackets and boots, if they are not waterproof. So here is how I dress for Niagara Falls winter magic:

• Base Layer: I swear by Thermal leggings and tops. These are must-wears and don’t even think of not wearing them. My favorite one is the Merino wool Base Layer. You can check the price and colors here.
• Middle Layer: I always wear a warm pullover or a fleece jacket as a middle layer. Because if it’s warm, you can always take that off. Also If I head to the Table Rock House Restaurant, I can sit without sweating.
• Outer Layer: Well I’m not saying it should be Canada Goose, but that layer should be a waterproof insulated coat, long with a hat. Look at what I’m wearing below. Many couldn’t even stand there 5 minutes, but, I could stand there long enough to take all the photos I wanted.

Hands, Feet, and Head

• Gloves: Well I don’t want to scare you, but the first time I visited Niagara Falls in -20°C, my hand sticked to my mobile and that’s not funny. Yes in that temperature, the skin can stick to any metal object, so you need warm gloves with phone touch if you want to take pictures. Here are my favorite ones.
• Hat: Keep your ears and neck covered. I normally wear a fleece-lined beanie and neck gaiter.
• Boots: honestly the only boots that work for me in Canada are the ones from Pajar. They kept me warm even in -40°C in Quebec city last year in winter. So make sure that the boots are waterproof and cover at least up to your knees. These are the ones I have from Pajar.
