If you’re short on time and don’t mind dealing with airports, flying can be a quick option. However, it’s not always the most efficient door-to-door.
Munich Airport is about 45 minutes drive from the Munich city and you have to be there at least 1/5 hour before. The flight itself is around 1h and again from Cologne airport to the city is around 20 minutes.
I normally take the train even for the day trips from Munich to Cologne, as I can use my time more effectively. I love to edit my photos or write some travel blog posts in the train.

Pro Tip: If you stay longer than 1 day in Cologne, I would recommend to take a day tour to Duesseldorf. It’s just 30 minutes from Cologne and it’s one of the most beautiful cities in Germany.
