The picture says Love what you do and do what you love

If you want to go directly to the quiz, just scroll down to the bottom of the page, but if you want to know my strategy of choosing the right niche, this post “How to find your Niche Quiz” will help you to get a better idea, how the search engines work and why choosing the right Niche is essential for your social media growth.

After starting more than 3 successful start-ups, I can say that your niche and the name of your brand, canโ€™t be easily changed afterward. If you do that, it’s like starting a new business. So you have to look deeper into it and spend some time to research.

Pro Tip: When choosing a business name, logo or brand name, you try to be relevant, creative and eye-catching. Itโ€™s exactly the same with your social media.

So letโ€™s dive into it!

Although you can start taking the “How to Find your Niche Quiz” immediately, but I recommend to read this blog first to understand the importance of choosing the right Niche for your brand.

Which Niche is good for me?

We all have hobbies, dreams, and passionsโ€”often more than one! You might be thinking, “Who would care about this passion of mine?” or “Thereโ€™s probably no audience for this hobby.” But let me tell youโ€”there is always someone out there who shares your interests.

Youโ€™re not alone, and your passion might be exactly what someone else is searching for. If you need more motivation to start your Social Media Presence, read my post about Why Youโ€™re Not Too Old for Social Media โ€“ A Beginnerโ€™s Guide

A Real Life Example:

For example, I know a 17-year-old girl who began her niche as simple as wrapping books as gifts, using themes inspired by fantasy films. What started as a simple hobby quickly turned into something much bigger.

Today, she receives over 50 orders a day โ€” just to wrap books and send them back. Who would have thought there was such high demand for something so niche?

Yet people are not only buying the books, they’re willing to go through the entire shipping process, all for the unique experience of beautifully themed gift wrapping.

Another example:

Ok May be you say thatโ€™s because she is 17, let me give you another example:  A woman in her 50s started making scented candles at home, just as a relaxing hobby.

She experimented with essential oils, seasonal themes, and calming designs. One day, she shared a photo of her candles on Instagram โ€” and to her surprise, a friend asked to buy one.

Pro Tip: Not only it’s not too late to start your social Media after 50, but this chapter of your life might just be the most powerful one yet. Check our post about how to use Social Media to start a side hustle.

That turned into five orders. Then ten. Today, she sells her handmade candle collections online and in small local shops. What began as a way to unwind became a thriving small business, simply because she leaned into something she genuinely enjoyed.

So where to start?

So again if youโ€™re dreaming of building a brand, starting a blog, growing on Instagram or YouTube, or even launching a small online business โ€” the very first step is choosing your niche.

This is not only about branding, it’s also important that your audience will find you. Another big factor is that the search engines will also find your blog, your posts on Instagram, Tiktok and other platforms. Get my ultimate guide for how to do Keyword search for each of these platforms.

In this post, I’ll show you where to start and how to find your niche. You can also take our Niche Quiz to help you find your Niche, but always adjust it to your personal goals. Now let’s dive into it:

How to Choose the Right Niche (Even if you’re Multi-Passionate)

Surely each one of us has different interests and passions. Specially I feel like I have even more passions now than in my 20s. Yes, that’s because in your 50s, you’ve lived, learned, and explored so many things! But to build a brand or blog, all you need is one clear & specific message for your audience.

Don’t think complicated, because the message can be as simple as: I want to show my audience how to organize their home, using cheap tricks. Or in my case, I want to show my audience the best places in Europe and Canada to travel, without breaking the bank.

Some Real Examples:

To better understand this, let’s just think about some of the most successful brands and companies and see how they did that:

  • The best example is the company Apple. They actually didn’t start by selling technical stuff like mobile or computer, but they started by focusing on personal computers. later on they expanded strategically and began to sell phones, tablets and other product. Their branding was clear, innovative and high-quality.
  • Another good example is Lululemon, which is a Canadian brand and we’re very proud of it in Canada. They started in 1998 with producing yoga apparels, but with a very high quality. Within a short period of time, they grew to a stylish athletic trend all over the world. But they started with simple yoga apparels.

In Find your Niche Quiz, I’ll help you in finding out more about if you want to be informative, entertaining or creative type of Content creator.

A Real Example of my Life:

As I started my travel blog a year ago, I never thought I would be able to earn even $1 from it. Honestly I wasn’t even thinking about it at that time. Until I’ve got my first sponsored post requested by a small restaurant. So that opened my eyes to a whole new world of affiliate marketing and sponsor posts. Also it created a good side hustle for me till today.

So as you all know Rome wasn’t built overnight and everything need some time, but if I could give you one advice that would be authenticity. You need to build trust and offer quality. That’s why I only offer products or hotels that I’ve already used and loved them, instead of offering thousand of products, that I don’t even know. But my audience like those limited products because they are good.

Pro Tip: Focus… Start with one clear niche or product and try to master it. Also it’s important to niche down. Don’t be broad like “travel” or “food’. Be specific, because that clarity helps your audience understand better who your are and what you’re offering and why they should follow you. Over time, when the trust is built, you can still expand your focus.

How to find the right fit:

1. List Your Passions and Experiences

To make it clear for you, being on social media and branding your niche, is a full-time job with at least a year of no earnings. (if youโ€™re lucky, you might earn a bit after 6 months, but let us stay realistic and donโ€™t look at exceptions).

So to find your Niche (quiz at the end), the subject youโ€™re choosing, should really be your passion. Actually something youโ€™re in love with and you can talk about it everyday that gives you power and happiness.

If youโ€™re asking why? I would say, the way is a bit long and you might feel frustrated sometimes. If youโ€™re half in love with what youโ€™re doing, you might easily give up.

A Real Example from my own Niche

Iโ€™ll tell you an example about myself: My biggest passion is cooking and traveling. I can travel to 5 cities within 24 hours and believe me I wonโ€™t feel exhausted. Just imagine that I was in Iran during the recent war, visiting Tehran as a traveler. Yes it was scary, but I continued my trip and I survived and I saw this as another adventure. Because I love traveling.

I am also very passionate about cooking and itโ€™s like a meditation for me. Especially when Iโ€™m stressed, cooking helps me to withdraw myself from the world. But I can’t cook 24 hours, but I can travel 365 days/year. That’s why I took travel as my main niche with a sub-niche about food.

What do you love doing?

So “how to find your niche quiz” at the end of this post, will help you find the perfect niche and what you really love to do. But if you’re not quite sure what you’re truly passionate about yet, thatโ€™s also completely okay โ€” it takes time and reflection. You can always change your niche slightly. So Start by asking yourself a few gentle questions:

Find your Niche sign on a black background
These are some of the questions from “How to find your Niche Quiz”. So let’s try to write the answers to each question.
  • What do people naturally come to you for help with?
  • Are there moments in your past that could inspire or teach others?
  • Have you ever lit up a room just by sharing your hobby or talent?
  • What do you love doing when you’re tired and just want to unwind?
  • And what do you find yourself thinking about or doing most often in your free time?

Your answers might hold the key to your unique path and the one thatโ€™s meant just for you. Write all your answers down and analyze. Also take the “how to find your niche Quiz” at the end of this post. This quiz will help you find your niche easier.

What are some Examples of a perfect niche:

For a better understanding of a perfect niche, I’ll give you some specific examples:

Hyper-Specific Lifestyle & Personal Development Niche
  • Digital Minimalism for Busy Moms
  • Slow Living in Small Spaces
  • Productivity for Neurodivergent Entrepreneurs

Creative Food & Drink Niche
  • Historical Recipes Reimagined
  • Vegan Camping Food
  • Persian Kitchen for beginners

Unique Travel Niche
  • Solo Female Travel After 50
  • Traveling the world with a Backpack

Note: These are just some examples to show you how to niche down. For example: only taking Solo traveler as a Niche is a bit broad and you’ll have many competitors. But if you niche down to Solo female travel is a step closer to your goal. You can even say you want to niche down even more to Solo Femail Travel for 50+.

This is a picture of someone writing target audience and there is a laptop and some pens on the table and he is holding a pen

2. Think About Who You Want to Help

This is the so called “Target Audience”. You should definitely know whom you’re writing or producing content for. If you’re making content for an audience who want to know how to travel from A to B, they might not be interested in beauty products that you’re using.

Yes, you can talk about those every once a while in your story after making some authority, but at the beginning they want to have guides and travel tips from you. If you don’t offer them, what they want to get, they’ll leave.

So Your niche is not just about you โ€” itโ€™s about who you want to serve. This is one of the most important things to remind yourself along the way: What my audience want to know. So ask yourself: Who do I feel called to speak to? Who is my audience? What is their age? Whom am I inspiring with my posts? and write down your answers.

“How to Find Your Niche Quiz” is a fun way to find out more about your passions and finding your Niche.

3. Research and Validate Your Idea

Search for your niche idea on Google, Pinterest, or YouTube. Are people searching for it? Is there interest? If yes โ€” thatโ€™s a great sign.

How to do the niche search? Just open google and search your niche. Easily google will give you also the related questions, people have asked about that niche or what else they are looking for. That’s the easiest way to do the research.

But if you want to be more accurate in your research, you need to use platforms like google trends, ubersuggest or ahrefs to find more about your keywords. You need to know how many people are searching it, How many competitors you have and how you can rank for it.

Pro Tip: Check my Ultimate Guide for how to boost traffic with Keywords on your blog, Pinterest and Social Media.

 5. Start Creating and Test What Clicks

No risk, no fun. So you really need to learn through practice. We all went through it and actually with the algorithms ups and down, we’ll have to change our strategies again and again. So all the creators started at the same position where you are today.

Pro Tip: Do not expect to be perfect at the beginning and start small. Set small and reachable goals for yourself. For example: 2 posts per week. I started with 2 posts per week and now I’m almost posting everyday. But you definitely need to be consistent. If you post 3 posts this week and 0 next week, that won’t work.

Then you can check, are people responding? Is Google responding (well that takes at least 6 months)? Social Media can help you find that too. Analyze what brings more interactions with your audience and focus more on that.

Important: Be happy with small engagements at the beginning. For your first posts or stories or reels on Instagram, even 30 views are a real success. After starting more than 5 social media channels and blogs, I can easily tell you that it’s almost impossible to hit 1000 views with the first reel. (exceptions exist, but those are rare)

This picture shows a keyboard showing success story in yellow

Why Choosing a Niche Is the First Step to Your Second Act

When I launched HungryJetlagged, I knew I wanted to talk about travel. But something clicked when I narrowed it down to travel for 50+. I tried writing posts and making Instagram reels for months, but I was just like all the other travelers and creators.

After doing a little bit of research on different blogs and specially successful bloggers, I learned to niche down. So Iโ€™ve started to niche down to writing for people after 50 like myself. Suddenly it worked out and views went up fast.

Why Does it Matter?

I don’t know about you, but I can remember the first time a brand reached out to me and invited me to participate in a new opening of their restaurant. I was so happy and had a feeling “I made it”. Everyone wants to be seen and it’s not all about getting paid.

I’m still doing lots of free events and write posts or make a reel about them, because I loved the food or the hotel. And I won’t get paid, but I do that because I love to talk about my passions and I love helping people. (And that’s why I’m writing this post).

As I started almost 5 years ago with Social Media, I had to find out everything myself. Today there are lots of courses and YouTube films, but at that time, you had to find out many things on your own. So that’s why i love to share this with you, so that you can grow your brand in an easier way.

What happened next?

Thatโ€™s when everything started to fall into place โ€” the voice, the content, the audienceโ€ฆ even the brand collaborations. Suddenly specific resorts reached out to me, because they knew their location was more interesting for 50+ couples. (my audience).

Especially in the online world, where attention is scarce, a strong niche gives your audience (and search engines like Google) a clear reason to follow you. Search Engines need to know exactly what you are talking about, and the more you write about your niche, they will see you more and more as an expert in that specific field and give you more authority.

Why Choosing a Narrowed Down Niche is Essential

Hereโ€™s why choosing a niche is essential:

  • You become memorable โ€” instead of being โ€œjust another blogger/ Instagrammer,โ€ you’re the go-to expert in your space.
  • You attract your people โ€” your content becomes more relatable and meaningful.
  • You can grow faster on Google and social media โ€” because algorithms understand your content better. (Although there are many factors for the growth, but this is certainly one of them)
  • You feel more confident โ€” clarity helps you overcome overwhelm and stay motivated.

Don’t forget to take “The How to Find Your Niche Quiz” at the end of this post.

This is about how to attract people

Why Search Engines Love a Clear Niche (SEO 101)

If you’re planning to blog, or grow a presence online on social media platforms, you need to be findable by search engines. You can write 100 posts and make 200 reels, but if the search engines, canโ€™t find your posts, youโ€™ll be your own audience.

We definitely donโ€™t want this, so thatโ€™s where Search Engine Optimization (SEO) comes in. And this in one word, is what the whole world is talking about as SEO

SEO means writing and organizing your content in a way that Google understands โ€” so it can show your blog in search results when someone types in a related keyword.

Hereโ€™s whatโ€™s important for SEO when choosing a niche:

1. Topic Consistency

Search engines like websites that cover one core topic well. Because they mark you as an expert in that special field. If your blog has articles about travel after 50, skincare after 50, and cat training, Search Engines might get confused. Specially at the beginning. So a clear niche helps them index your site properly, and don’t forget you can always expand later.

2. Keyword Strategy

Once you have a niche, you can target specific keywords your audience is searching for (e.g., โ€œsolo travel after 50โ€ or โ€œInstagram tips for beginners over 50โ€). Check my post about how to boost your traffic with a right keyword strategy.

SEO and Backlinks and ranking and how to do that and why it's important for our niche finding

If you want to start your blog, one of the most important things for building authority, is the number of other websites linking to yours. That is called backlinks. And it’s not as easy as it sounds to get a backlink to your website.

But Niche blogs are more likely to get backlinks, especially if their content is helpful, original, and specific. Because they are experts in a specific field. And thatโ€™s really important.

So yes โ€” choosing a niche helps your audience, your creativity, AND your SEO. And the more you niche down, the easier search engines can find you.

My Best Advice: Start with Clarity, But Allow Yourself to Grow

Choosing a niche isnโ€™t a prison, itโ€™s a start. Start focusing on one niche and after gaining trust, you can grow your audience, and expand your niche strategy. I also started sharing reels about Toronto, where I live. Back then, I was working full-time and couldnโ€™t travel often, so exploring the city on weekends and capturing it became the perfect way to create content.

Over time, that small step grew into something bigger, and I gradually began to expand beyond just Toronto. And today I’m writing also about travel destinations in Europe and newly started slowly with middle east.
