Hotel Platzl Review: A Bavarian Stay in Downtown Munich

Munich is one of the most beautiful cities in Germany with a true Bavarian charm. Also it’s one of our favorite gateways to Europe, when traveling from Canada. That’s why we tried different hotels in Munich downtown, and Hotel Platzl with it’s long history is one of our favorite luxury hotels in the heart of Munich.

Hotel Platzl is located in the most historical part of Munich, called Platzl. You are basically surrounded by Bavarian architecture and famous attractions like Marienplatz, the famous Hofbräuhaus, Viktualienmarkt and many others.

Our Short Review of the Hotel Platzl

Best Location in Munich Old city. Hotel Platzl is the the best hotel in Munich for the first-timer, who want to explore as many attractions as they can, within a short stay. But also it’s a luxury stay with high standards and local Bavarian food.

We really made memories at Hotel Platzl and not only loved our beautiful room and the welcoming atmosphere, but we also enjoyed it’s authentic, cultural side. Also the facilities, like the spa, fitness room and massage was fantastic, and we had one of the best breakfasts ever.

Hotel Platzl, definitely stands out for it’s traditional Bavarian style, it’s cozy lobby and Bar atmosphere, an excellent breakfast buffet. But Also it’s home to two of the most famous restaurants in Munich and easily walkable to the old town of Munich.

Hotel Platzl Review: Breakfast, Room, Facilities, Location

Platzl Hotel is one of Munich’s most traditional hotels, so I always wanted to stay there. As you can see above, the hotel combines the authentic Bavarian style with wooden furniture and small-rounded windows, with modern luxury.

Also it’s known for its fine-dining restaurant, Pfistermühle and Ayinger am Platzl, which are one of the favorite restaurants by the locals in Munich. So staying in this historic atmosphere just 5 minutes away from Marienplatz, is once in a life-time experience.

Where is Hotel Platzl Located?

Hotel Platzl is only 5-10 minutes from the main attractions of Munich. Most of the museums, churches and historical places are all in a walking distance. This is honestly one of the biggest advantages of staying there. Metro station of Marienplatz is just a step away from the Hotel too.

The Lobby and the Check in at Hotel Platzl

You immediately enjoy the warm wooden interiors, as you walk into the lobby. IT feels elegant and also at the same time a place to chill. There is a Cafe and Bar at the right side of the lobby with snacks and drinks. I highly recommend to try one of the cocktails.

Also there is a huge sitting area, where you can sit and enjoy the view outside or just meet up with someone. At the end of the lobby area, there is a work-space area, where you can finish up some work as well.

You feel like you are in a family hotel and is not one of those typical hotel chains, which we always prefer. Also the reception was easy and done in a minute. You will receive an email a week in advance, where you can check-in online and you’ll get the room card.

Also there is a valet Parking right in front of the hotel, but you can also park your car yourself in the parking of the hotel, which is just at the back side of the building.

Our Room at Hotel Platzl Munich

We were lucky to stay at one of the most beautiful suites in Hotel Platzl. Our Superior Suite, was actually like an apartment. We could imagine to stay there even a month. It really gave us the feeling we’re at home and felt very comfortable.

The Suite has 2 rooms, separable with a door and the bedroom was spacious. We loved the cozy little windows, that took you to the old times. Also although you’re in the middle of the city, the room was so quiet and I still don’t know, how they could make that happen, but German engineering always fascinated me.

We loved the bed and there was a TV in the bedroom and a separate TV in the living room, so you can basically close the door, if you want to stay awake longer and watch a film. While your husband is sleeping in the other room, or whatches his favorite football game.

The Living Room

What we loved about the room, was not only the spacious, comfortable bed, but it was also the sofa in the living room. I could stick to it the whole day, and we also had 2 blankets as well. Such a luxury feeling. By arrival we also received 2 plates of home-made bread with butter and a brownie with berries. I couldn’t get enough from that.

And if you’re visiting Germany, you should definitely try the bread. German bread is very famous for it’s crusty surface and puffy inside. Try the semmel and the Brezel when you’re in Munich. There’s also a fridge with mini bar and safe in the living room, as well as a fantastic coffee maker.

The Bathroom is a true luxury

Well, the biggest surprise of the Superior Suite at Platzl Hotel was actually the bathroom. The Bathroom is huge and a real luxury experience. The whole bathroom is in a kind of white/golden marble with gold details and divided into 3 areas. One for the shower, one for the toilet and the other one for the vanity area.

Also the toilet was one of the most high-tech ones, I have ever seen, with a remote control for washing, lighting, air settings, and even much more. And the good news for the ladies, is that you basically don’t need to bring anything, as you can find a hair dryer, a hair curler, a hair straightener, a comb and so many other thoughtful things.

The Culinary Breakfast at Hotel Platzl

Ok, now this is the best part of the day, which is a real culinary trip to the Bavarian local products. The breakfast at Hotel Platzl is generous, huge buffet and very high quality. Whatever is on your wish list, you can finde it there.

Here is just a short list of what you can get there and believe me there’s so much more. So we basically just had breakfast and dinner.

• fresh home-made bread (different types) and pastries
• croissants and sweet options
• eggs and warm dishes (also you can order fresh omelet and sunny side
• cheese and cold cuts, which I highly recommend to try. Germany has one of the best milks in the world, which makes the cheese so delicious. My favorite is Emmentaler and Gouda.
• fruit and juices: you can make your juice yourself
• Bavarian breakfast items, like sausages and prezels
• coffee and tea as well as different juices and many kinds of cereals with fresh fruits and yoghurt. (vegan options are also available)
• a calm and cozy breakfast room atmosphere

Note: The breakfast costs around 22 Euros if you book with your hotel, and it’s totally worth it. It’s daily from 7am to 11pm.

Spa and Fitness amenities at Hotel Platzl

You can also find a small wellness room on the 5th floor with a Finnish sauna and Sonarium. I also loved the relaxation area with the refreshments such as water, tea and fruits. I also loved the Sauna with the view of the new city hall, specially at night.

Also there is a boutique gym next to the Sauna area with different equipment and a separate weight area. You can also book different in-house massage treatments.

Restaurants at Hotel Platzl

You can immediately realize that the culinary is one of the main pillars of the hotel Platzl and it’s not just the breakfast or the bar, but there are another 2 restaurants which are connected to Hotel Platzl.

Both restaurants are located in the area called Platzl, which is next to the hotel and is one of the oldest and most beautiful part of the Munich’s downtown.

Wirtshaus Ayinger am Platzl

One of the favorite restaurants by the locals is the Wirtshaus Ayinger which is located in the heart of the old city, just 2 minutes walk from the hotel. This restaurants offers a more traditional environment and the building itself is so beautiful.

Ayinger is one of the oldest family-owned breweries in Aying by Munich and you should definitely try the beer with a Schweinebraten (Bavarian pork dish). Prices are all middle range restaurants with a great service and fresh-made food.

Restaurant Pfistermühle

Restaurant Pfistermühle is located next to the hotel Platzl and is one of the most famous fine-dining restaurants in Munich. The building itself is a historical building with a beautiful interior, where you can also sit outside in the patio during the warmer months.

They offer both lunch and dinner with an International touch. We loved the lunch the 4-course-menu on a platter. The first course was an asparagus salad with a green salad, following by the second course of a Gazpacho soup and I took the Spinach Gnocchi for the main dish.

The hotel describes Pfistermühle as a restaurant in a historic vaulted cellar, offering seasonal fine cuisine and a strong wine selection.

This is the restaurant I would choose for a more romantic dinner, a special evening, or when you want something quieter and more refined than a traditional beer hall.

The setting itself is a big part of the experience. It feels historic, intimate, and very Munich.

Josefa Bar: The Stylish Bar at Platzl Hotel

Another highlight of the hotel is Josefa Bar.

Josefa is not just a hotel bar hidden in the corner of a lobby. It has its own personality. The hotel describes Josefa as a meeting place where urban Munich meets Italian lifestyle, while still staying rooted in Bavarian life. It also works with local producers and regional coffee roasters.

I loved that Josefa felt stylish but still warm. It is a nice place for a coffee during the day, a drink before dinner, or a nightcap after exploring Munich.

The hotel also has Josefa Karree, the outdoor bar area, which is especially nice in warmer months. The hotel says Josefa and Josefa Karree are ideal for coffee breaks, signature drinks, snacks, and evening drinks in central Munich.
