What we love about Portugal is that they are all just an hour away from the big cities. All just a short journey from Porto, from the famous Douro Valley wine tours to fairytale palaces in Sintra, and even crossing the border to Santiago de Compostela in Spain.

Whether you have just 1 day in Porto or a full week, these destinations are perfect for escaping the city and diving deeper into the culture, nature, and history of northern Portugal and beyond.

1. Douro Valley – A Wine Lover’s Dream

If I had to pick just one best day trip from Porto, it would be the Douro Valley. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is postcard-perfect, with terraced vineyards rolling down to the river and family-run quintas (wineries) welcoming you with open arms.

You can take a Douro Valley day trip from Porto by car, train, or even by boat. I highly recommend a porto to Douro Valley day trip that includes a wine tasting and a river cruise—it’s the best way to soak in the scenery and sip on the world-famous Port wine.

Top tips: Visit Peso da Régua or Pinhão, both iconic villages. Book a river cruise or wine tour in advance, especially in summer. It’s much easier for Douro Valley.

Getting There: About 1.5 to 2 hours by car or train. But we took a tour with Cruise from Porto and it was so much fun.

What to Do: Visit vineyards like Sandeman or Quinta do Bomfim, enjoy a boat cruise on the Douro River, and stop by Peso da Régua or Pinhão. These 2 villages worth visiting.

Photography Tip: If you go there with tours, they build a 2x 20 minutes for photography from top of the valley so you can get the best shots.

2. Braga – The Rome of Portugal

Nicknamed the “Rome of Portugal,” Braga is one of the oldest cities in the country and full of beautiful churches, gardens, and baroque architecture. It’s only about an hour by train, making it a super easy day trip from Porto by train.

Don’t miss the iconic Bom Jesus do Monte sanctuary with its zigzagging staircase—climbing it is a workout and a spiritual experience all at once. Also visit Braga Cathedral and take time to enjoy a coffee in one of the city’s charming squares. 

We spent a full day just enjoying the view and beauty of Bon Jesus and took an uber to Braga. Braga is a cute city and is ideal if you love history, architecture, and peaceful vibes. Definitely a must-add to your list of best day trips from Porto Portugal.

Getting There: About 1.5 hours by train, but there is so much to visit in Coimbra so if you don’t have more than a day, I would suggest to get a tour to visit Aveiro and Coimbra together.

8. Peneda-Gerês National Park

For a true nature escape, head north to Peneda-Gerês, Portugal’s only national park. It’s about 2 hours from Porto, and best done with a tour or rental car.

Ponte de Lima is like something out of a medieval painting. Known as Portugal’s oldest village, it’s full of cobblestone lanes, historic bridges, and traditional architecture.

It’s quieter than other destinations but incredibly charming. Walk along the Lima River, explore the small shops.

Getting There: About 1.5 hours by car. We went there by car, as we had photography gears and didn’t want to switch trains with all those stuff. But there’s a train or bus ride from Porto to Ponte de Lima and it has 1 Stop in Nine. It’s one of the best peaceful porto day trips.

What to Do: Walk the Roman bridge, visit local gardens, and enjoy traditional cuisine.

Photography Tip: As you can see above, the capture of reflections under the bridge at dusk is fascinating. A 50mm lens is great for street portraits here, so don’t forget that.

11. Vila do Conde – Beaches

Less than an hour away, Vila do Conde combines beach vibes with historic charm. Visit the Santa Clara Monastery, stroll through the old town, and walk along the Ave River.

If you’re into architecture and history but want to mix it with some sun, this is a great balance. It’s perfect for a summer day trip from Porto, especially if you want to avoid crowds.

Getting There: I would suggest to go there by Metro line B (Red Line). The arrival Station is Vila do Conde Station. It’s just 2.70 Euro and 45 minutes ride. The view of the beach is stunning and in Summer you can enjoy the water.

What to Do: See the aqueduct, visit Santa Clara Monastery, and enjoy the sandy beach. Although the water is from Atlantic and is generally cool, even in summer the water temperature is around 16 C (61 F). So it might feel a bit chilly even in summer.

Pro tip: We suggest to visit Vila do Conde on a Friday to catch the local market—fresh produce, handmade goods, and a true slice of local life, all just steps from the riverfront! Believe me, you’ll love it.
