Best Time to visit Toronto Canada

Toronto is a beautiful city with a scenic nature. I still remember the first year I moved to Toronto during the Fall foliage in September. I couldn’t believe my eyes and the beautiful fall colors here. You just had to walk around in the small streets, for the world’s best fall photos. For more details, Check our Post about Fall Foliage in Ontario.

But let’s be honest, if you’re not a big fan of winter activities, I don’t recommend you to visit Toronto in winter. I love Toronto’s winter now, after living here for 4 years. But the first time I visited Toronto as a tourist from Germany, it was in January with -31ยฐ C/ -24 ยฐ F. And It was cold and I didn’t enjoy it.

Behrad (my husband) took this beautiful winter photo from the red street cars in Toronto on Dundas streets. Winter is not the Best time to visit Toronto if you're not a winter lover.

Best Season to visit Toronto

As said before, Toronto is a vibrant city with lots of activities and festivals. Below we’ll break down the things you can do in Toronto in each season and will give you some tips for your visit in each season. So you can decide, which season, suits your travel style.

Spring in Toronto: Cherry Blossoms

Although March is the official beginning of the spring here, but you won’t see any blossoms till the end of April. So if you want to visit Toronto for the Blossoms, it’s best to visit at the end of April or beginning of May. May is the most beautiful month in Toronto and the best to see the cherry blossoms.

And believe me, it’s one of the most beautiful places in the world to see the Cherry Blossoms. I would even rank it as the second one, after Japan. So if you’re planning to visit Ontario, early May is definitely the first choice I would choose. It’s the best time to visit Toronto’s Cherry Blossoms.

Also in May the tulip farms are full of tulips and they are mostly at Niagara on the lake. So if you’re planning to visit Niagara Falls as well, don’t miss that. Our favorite Tulip farm is called Tascgrowtogether, which is huge and lots of activities.

Pro Tip: For more details about Cherry Blossom season in Toronto and exact dates check our post about Most Amazing places to visit in Toronto for the Cherry Blossom season. Here is the link!

Summer In Toronto: Beach, Sun and Festivals

Summer in Toronto officially starts in June, but the weather is mild and still not warm enough to relax with a bikini on the beach. And yes you can do that in Toronto as well. July and August are really warm months with a high humidity, so you can definitely go to the beach and enjoy the water activities in Toronto.

I love June for hiking, road trips and outdoor activities. The weather is mild and the humidity is still not high. We love to visit the cities around Ontario like Blue mountain and Collingswood. It’s the best time to visit Toronto’s beaches and get some sun tan.

July is a fantastic warm summer month here in Toronto, where you can enjoy the beaches and festivals. Also Patios are open and the city comes to life. We definitely recommend to take a Cruise dinner or lunch , if you’re here in summer. It takes around 2 hours with breathtaking views of our skyline and Centre island. Click here to book the one we always recommend our guests.

Pro Tip: June is the best month in Toronto for hiking and enjoying the trails. We normally do camping, canoeing and all kinds of water activities. The weather is still mild, but warm. Check our guide for the best Trails in Toronto, if you love to do hiking in Toronto.

Fall In Toronto: Fall Foliage & Sightseeing

Fall in Toronto will surprise you in every aspect. It officially starts in September, but September is still warm and beach time. From mid-September leaves start to change their colors, but the best time to see the fall foliage here, is from October to early November.

And the whole city turns into a painting. Fall Foliage in Toronto is unreal and so colorful. If you’re a hiker, photographer or nature-lover, we recommend to visit Toronto during fall season. Although we’re full-time travelers, we normally stay in Toronto during October to get the best shots.

Pro Tip: The most beautiful Fall Foliage in Ontario is at Algonquin park, which is 3 hours ride from Toronto. If you’re planning to visit Ontario at that time, Algonquin Park is a Must-visit. You can also check our guide to Algonquin Park for Camping, Hiking and best Fall Foliage trails.

Winter In Toronto: Winter Wonderland but Cold

Let me be honest with you as I lived 25 years in Munich which also has cold winters, but nothing is comparable to the cold temperatures in Canada. So if you’re not used to -20 ยฐC, you’ll not enjoy it. If you’re from Finland or Russia, yes you’re used to it and you’ll enjoy your time here.

But now that I’ve got used to it, my favorite photos are from the frozen Lake Ontario in February or the Ice rains. It’s a true winter wonderland and the best place for photography and winter activities. Also it’s the best time to visit Toronto for winter activities.

If you like Christmas festivals, December is one of the most beautiful seasons in Toronto. The city looks like a true wonderland with so many Christmas festivals and winter villages. We really love to stay in Toronto in December and enjoy the festive atmosphere.

My Husband Behrad took this picture 2 years ago from the ice rain in Toronto, where all the trees where frozen. Such a beautiful scenery

Pro Tip: Best place to go is the one and only Distillery District Winter Village which normally begins on November 15 till the end of December. Also Toronto is amazing for Ice skating on Nathan Philips square and Harbourfront.

January and February in Toronto:

January and February are the coldest months in Toronto (normally). And honestly we normally travel during January, as the temperatures goes down to -30 C. It’s also difficult to do outdoor activities.

I don’t recommend it for the first-time travelers to Toronto, as you should mostly stick to indoor activities. You’ll basically miss the beautiful, untouched nature of Ontario.

Pros

  • Accommodations are much cheaper during these months. So you can definitely find better options, specially in January.
  • If you’re into scenic winter photography, you’ll get the best opportunities at Lake Ontario and Niagara Falls.
  • If you’re into Ice-Skating and Skiing, it’s a fabulous winter vacation for you.

Cons

  • Cold temperatures are often below -20 ยฐC. It might be difficult for those, who are not used to those tempretures.
  • Outdoor activities, are limited, if you’re not a winter-sport lover. But there are indoor festivals and shopping Malls available.
  • Because of the Lake Ontario, sometimes the weather can be strongly windy, so it feels even colder.

Pro tip: So for me January and February are the worst months to travel to Toronto. But if you still want to do that, we curated a good list of the best things to do in Toronto in January and February to enjoy your time here.

March & April in Toronto

March and April in Toronto are getting a bit warmer than February and in April you can start doing some hiking or outdoor activities. But March in Toronto is still cold. The temperatures are between -2ยฐC and 10ยฐC in April.

March in Toronto is still cold and the trees are still naked. So if you want to plan your visit in one of these 2 months, I would rather suggest to aim for mid April. The last two weeks of April are the beginning of the spring. Also Blossoms start to bloom and tulip farms as well.

Pros

  • Certainly it’s less touristy and if you want to visit the main attractions like CN tower, it’s the best time.
  • You can walk around and although the weather is still cold, but it’s mild and doable.
  • In April, flowers start to bloom and the city as well as the nature begins to feel lively again.
  • April is a good time for hiking. Also there are great trails and parks in Toronto to visit.

Cons

  • March is still quite cold and it more feels like winter than spring.
  • Also trees still look naked and without leaves, but at the end of April they start to bloom.
  • In March you’ll miss to visit the Centre Island in Toronto, which is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Toronto.
  • Although it’s cold in winter, but Toronto has so many sunny days. But during March and till mid April, we have a lot of rainy days.

Pro Tip: The last 2 weeks in April are fantastic and temperatures are mild between 10-15ยฐC, so you can better enjoy the days. Also with a little bit of luck, you can enjoy the full blooms at the end of April and it’s truly amazing. End of April or early May is the best time to visit Toronto for the Cherry Blossoms.

  • Also if you have time, we recommend to take a day-trip to Niagara falls. It’s a must-visit and you can enjoy the city. There are several ways how to reach there from Toronto. You can check our full Guide here.

Pro Tip: if you’re time is limited, there are amazing day-tours from Toronto to Niagara Falls. They can even pick you up at the hotel. We always recommend the one with the tickets for the boat cruise and the journey behind the falls (you don’t want to miss that). Click here to Book our favorite tour from Toronto to Niagara Falls.

May in Toronto: Best time to visit Toronto

If you want to travel in May, it’s the best time to travel to Toronto. The weather is mild, the cherry blossoms are all over the city. May is a great time for both city travelers and nature lovers in Toronto.

Specially the first two weeks are fantastic and you can make sure, you’ll not miss the Sakura here. May is also a great time to visit Niagara Falls or other cities in Ontario.

Also hiking is one of my favorite activities in May. Also the hotel prices are still reasonable and just on-time before the high-season starts. And I can’t find any cons for traveling to May to Toronto.

June & July in Toronto: Best Time to Visit Toronto

Finally summer shows up in town and it’s beach time. Although many might think that we don’t have a warm summer here, that’s not true. And that’s what I love about Toronto, as you can really enjoy the 4 season here and you even have several beaches in the town.

If you want mild but warm temperatures, the best time to visit Toronto in summer is in June and July. Although August is also good, but normally the humidity is very high in August, and that makes it a bit difficult to stay or walk outside sometimes.

June and July are the best time to enjoy the outdoor activities and festivals in Toronto. The City comes to life after a long sleep and it’s such a vibrant atmosphere. We normally don’t travel around in the summer, because we love the vibes here in Toronto and love to enjoy the beaches.

Pros

  • The biggest pro is the weather with temperatures up to 30ยฐC.
  • Beaches are open and in July you can enjoy swimming. In June the water is still cold.
  • You can easily walk around the city and enjoy the Patios and outdoor restaurants.
  • It’s the Festival season with many options and long daylight hours.

Cons

  • It’s surely touristy and crowded, so you might need to wail in queues for the restaurants and attractions.
  • The Hotel prices and flights are more expensive compared to shoulder season.
  • In late July Humidity might be very high with heat warnings.

Pro Tip: If you’re planning to visit Toronto during summer, we suggest to go for the last 2 weeks of June or first two weeks in July. I know it’s unbelievable but at the end of July, the weather can be very hot and humid, so that makes walking a bit difficult.

The Woodbine Beach in Toronto is also on of our favorite places to visit during Summer. This is a short view of it. Summer is one of the best time to visit Toronto.

Amazing Things to Do in Summer in Toronto
  • Take a ferry to Toronto Islands and enjoy the activities like beaches, bike rentals, picnic or just relaxing and walking around the island. Our favorite island for swimming is Ward’s island. It’s a hidden gem and more local than Centre Island.
  • Get a Cruise for a dinner at night and enjoy the night view of Toronto city. we love that view and you can find different options with plated dinner and onboard Dj. You can also do a brunch or lunch cruise, which is also fun. But we love the night views more. Click here to book the Cruise.
  • There are several festivals and events in the summer in Toronto. Some of our favorites are: Toronto Jazz Festival, Pride Toronto (late June), Canada Day Celebration (July1) and lots of outdoor concerts. You can check here for the full list of festivals in Toronto.

Must-Visit Places in Toronto in Summer for Food-lovers

If you’re a foodie like us, there are 2 places you can’t miss during your visit in Toronto. St. Lawrence Market should be definitely on your list, because this is where you can eat local food and fresh with a beautiful outdoor sitting area. So don’t miss it, if you’re a foodie.

Also Kensington Market is a perfect place to eat international cuisine from all around the world. Besides if you’re a vintage fan like me, you’ll find so many cute vintage shops there. Check our Youtube Guide for Kensington Market Toronto below.

August in Toronto

August is in general the hottest month in Toronto. Although the water is finally enough warm to swim in the lake Ontario, but the humidity is too high. We have lots of heat warnings during August. But we love doing Kayaking around Ontario, where it’s a bit milder through the lake’s breeze.

The temperatures can feel up to 40ยฐC because of the high humidity, which makes it difficult to walk around. But evenings are very pleasant and it’s the best time to enjoy the nightlife in Toronto.

But August for me is the best time to visit Farms in Ontario. If you’re traveling with kids or you’re a farm-lover like us, you can have a great time driving around Ontario. The Sun flower farms and lavender Farms are fantastic and in full bloom during August.

Pros

  • It’s a great beach weather and kayaking or waterfront activities.
  • Also you can enjoy sitting in restaurant’s patios at night and dine without a wind.
  • If you’re into caves and mountains, it’s a good time for day trips to mountains, caves and farms around Toronto.

Cons

  • Some days can really feel uncomfortable outside, especially during heatwaves.
  • The hotel prices are very high and it’s the peak tourist time in Toronto, so might need to wait longer for ferries or attractions like CN Tower.
  • Beaches are also full, unless you’re an early bird.

Pro Tip: If you’re in Toronto in August and love to see some of the most beautiful farms in Toronto, it’s the best time for Sunflower farms. Our favorite one is the Sunflower field in Markham, which is a 20 min. drive from Toronto. The Farm is huge and looks like an endless ocean of sunflowers and it’s just a short drive from Toronto.

September and October: Best time to visit Toronto

Although September is the beginning of the Fall Season in Canada as well, but you fell like summer until mid-September. I love this month and the first two weeks are still perfect to enjoy the beaches and walking in the flower gardens. Flowers are all over the place and it’s one of the best months for outdoor activities.

Fall colors will start to show up by the end of September, although the temperature is still around 20ยฐC. Also you can easily take a walk around at night and still enjoy the patios. It’s mostly sunny with low humidity and very pleasant weather.

The Best time to visit Toronto for the fall Foliage is October. We’re mostly outside in this month and just doing camping and photography. The colors are jaw dropping and I highly recommend this month, as the city turns to a postal card.

Pros

  • Normally we have a mild weather, which is perfect for walking around the city and doing outdoor activities.
  • Fall Colors are stunning and after traveling to more than 50 countries, I find Ontario’s Fall the most beautiful one.
  • Hotels are definitely cheaper than in summer and also fewer tourists.

Cons

  • Evenings are a bit chilly, so from mid September, you can’t really sit outside in patios at night.
  • Although you can enjoy walking at the beaches, but water is definitely cold for swimming.
  • Due to the daylight hour changes, you have shorter days and longer nights.

Pro Tip: If you’re a photographer, Algonquin Provincial Park is a paradise for photography the first 2 weeks in October. Also it’s perfect for camping and hiking. Check our ultimate guide for photography and camping in Algonquin Provincial park for more details.

Best Resort to stay for Fall Folliage

Another beautiful place is Muskoka lake and it turns into a painting. We love to stay at JW Marriott Muskoka Resort & Spa. This resort has a fantastic location in front of the Muskoka lake and we love the views. Also the rooms have a small kitchen and separate living room, which makes it comfortable for longer stays.

But I must say that the rooms do needs to be modernized and it’s a bit expensive for the quality of the rooms. But the location is unbeatable and you need to book longer in advance during the fall, as it sells out fast. We always take the lake view 1 king bedroom + sofa bed. Check and Book your room here.

Things to do in Toronto in September and October
  • If you’re visiting Toronto late September or early October, you should visit high park and Tommy Thompson park for the fall colors.
  • Also if you can rent a car and drive to Algonquin Park, we highly recommend it. It’s a once in a lifetime experience. Check our guide for the details.
  • Early September is the Toronto International Film Festival and if you’re into films there are lots of events around the city. Also the chance to meet your favorite Hollywood artist walking in downtown Toronto is high.
  • You can enjoy walking around specially at Toronto Islands, Cherry Beach and Sugar Beach.

November in Toronto

Although the first week in November might still be pleasant, but that’s all. The rest of November is windy, cold and temperatures drop down to 5ยฐC or even less by the end of the month.

This year we even had the first snowfall in mid November, which was dreamy, but too early. If you’re visiting Toronto for sightseeing and outdoor activities, this is definitely the wrong month. I actually do not recommend November for the first-timers.

Pro Tip: But if you’re looking for a place to celebrate early Christmas Holidays, Toronto is a great destination. We start from November 15 with the opening of the winter village at Distillery District. This cozy little town in downtown Toronto looks like out of fairytale and if you’re in Toronto in November, you should definitely visit.

Pros

  • Hotels are cheaper during November and there are fewer tourists.
  • You can visit galleries, museums and shopping malls.
  • late November is the beginning of the Christmas Markets and slowly slowly the city looks very festive. And I love that part.

Cons

  • Days are shorter and the weather in Toronto in November is less ideal for outdoor activities.
  • Also along the Lake Ontario can be windy and cold, so you can’t really enjoy visiting Centre Island or walking at the Promenade.
  • Since Toronto’s nature is one of it’s major attractions, you’ll miss that.

What to do in Toronto in November
  • Early November is still beautiful and yellow leaves are all over the place. Visit High Park or the Ever Green Park to enjoy the views.
  • Use this time to visit the indoor attractions of Toronto. CN Tower, Ripley’s Aquarium, Royal Ontario Museum and Casa Loma are less crowded at this time.
  • If you’re visiting Toronto after November 15, visit Distillery District winter village. Don’t forget to try a hot chocolate by Soma, which is the best one in the town. Also Cafe Demetres is another great option for sweets to keep you warm.

December in Toronto: Best Time to Visit Toronto

I love this month here with so many festive events and winter villages, the city comes to life. And the good news is that although it might be snowy, but it’s not that cold. The temperatures are normally around 0ยฐC to -5ยฐC. So it’s a true winter wonderland.

If you love Christmas festivals, we recommend you to visit Toronto in December. I would say it’s the best time to visit Toronto in winter. The holiday magic starts around November 15 till January 3rd.

The Christmas Tree at Distillery districtI took this phot this year, during December. December is one of the best time to visit Toronto.
Toronto Distillery District at Christmas Time

Pros

  • You’ll love the holiday magic here all over the place with holiday markets and Christmas decorations.
  • Christmas Market at the Distillery District is one of the biggest highlights of December and it’s full of food stalls and great events.
  • If you’re into winter sport like ice skating, the rinks at Nathan Phillips Square and Harbourfront open.

Cons

  • Although it’s not that cold for us (living in Canada), but it might be cold for those who are not used to minus temperatures.
  • Hotels can be expensive if you don’t book in advance.
  • Also weather can be risky through sudden snowstorms or ice rains. So you might have some plan changes.

Pro Tip: If you’re visiting Toronto in December, you definitely need to wear layers. Also you need waterproof winter boots, hat and gloves. The Good thing about Toronto Downtown is that you can walk under the city through PATH. It’s a walkway that connects the whole downtown together.

Best Outfit for Winter in Toronto

If you’re wondering which boots and Coats are best for winter in Toronto, here is all I use to keep me warm here:

  • My Favorite Boots: The only boots that are really working here are the boots from Pajar. Because it keeps you warm even in temperatures up to -30ยฐC. Click here to check the ones I have.
  • My favorite Winter Coat: I am wearing the long Coats from ROCK AND BLUE, which is a fantastic brand from Sweden. I am buying these whenever I go to Germany and they don’t ship to Canada. But if it happens that you’re in Europe reading this, that’s the best one to stay stylish and warm without breaking the bank.
  • Hat: You can basically wear any hat which is warm an has 2 layers. The inner layer should made of fleece so it keeps you warm. Check the one I’m using here.
  • Thermal Underwear: Also a thermal underwear is a must if you want to stay outside for a while. I have the one from Macyfit for $ 35 and I’m really happy with it. Get the one I’m using here.

Fantastic Things to Do in Toronto in December

There are so many things to do in Toronto in December and as said it’s a good time to visit Toronto. Here are my favorite places:

  • Visit Distillery District winter village in December. You need to buy the tickets for the winter village to enter. But it’s definitely worth a visit.
  • Go to Nathan Philips Square for the festival of lights and ice-skating. There are many programs of best performances on ice rink.
  • Also Harbour Front has a beautiful, cozy Christmas market with a stage. What I love about it is the view of the CN tower at the back ground and the lake Ontario on the front. Yes, that’s beautiful specially at night.
  • And the highlight of the festivals is the 35meter (114 feet) Christmas Tree inside the Eaton Center at Dundas street. Also it’s decorated with tens of thousands LED lights and offers a light show with snow daily. the program is normally starting everyday from 1pm to 9 pm.

Watch the full video of Eaton Center’s Christmas Tree below:

Best time to Fly to Toronto

Actually we’re used to extreme weather and even in temperatures with -30 our airport still operates normal. But if it’s ice-rain or extreme snowstorm, then you might have delays. Normally some of the late-night flights are affected, so it’s better not to get the very last flight in winter to come to Toronto.
