Over the years, I’ve made it my mission to find the best places to travel in October, and let me tell you, there’s no shortage of fun places to go in October where the sun still shines and adventures are waiting.

If you’re anything like me, October is one of those magical months where travel feels just right. Summer crowds are gone, the weather is still warm in many parts of the world, and prices start to dip — making it a dream month for explorers, foodies, and beach lovers.

Whether you’re searching for the best international trips in October, a cultural getaway, or a sunny seaside retreat, these are my 14 best vacation destinations to travel in October — based on my own journeys and experiences.

In this guide, you’ll find information on the best things to do, best hotels, temperatures in October, best restaurants and best beaches. Also I have tips for senior travelers and travelers with mobility issues.

1. Mallorca, Spain: Sun, Sea and Serenity 

We love to travel to Mallorca any time of the year except in summer, because the beaches are full. But one of our best places to travel in October, is definitely Mallorca and Ibiza. Unlike summer months, it’s a quiet and best time to relax without breaking the bank in this beautiful Island.

Why we love that? Because the beaches aren’t crowded, and you can still swim in the sea, if you go for the first two weeks of October. Also Palma’s old town is delightful to wander through, with tapas bars spilling onto cobblestone streets. If this is your vibe, here are more details:

Weather: Expect daytime highs around 22–24 °C (72–75 °F), while evenings cool to about 14–16 °C.

How to get around:

We always rent a car to explore the island. There are many hidden places all over the place and if you like to explore new gems, I highly recommend that. Public transportation to attractions are also available but you can’t drive to all the beaches with those.

Car Rental Tip for Europe: We normally either book the cars by Sixt or Europcar. Living in Europe more than 20 years of my life, those 2 have the best services in Europe, in case something happens.

Ideal Trip Length: We normally stay around 3 days in Mallorca and 3 days in Ibiza. So I would say 3-6 days.

Places to visit:

Must-Visits are definitely Palma de Mallorca, Soller, Deia, Valldemossa, Santanyi. If you have more time, we recommend to take a boat tour to explore the Drach Caves.

The Caves were fascinating with impressive rock formations and an underground lake that made the whole experience unique. The tour was an easy excursion, well-organized, and a great way to see the island from the water. If you like to know more details or book the tour here is the link.

We also went snorkeling and you can also swim in the water. Additionally you’ll enjoy some Tapas on the board.

Mallorca’s Best beaches:

We love Calo des Moro, Cala Llombards and Cala Mondrago.

Our Favorite Restaurants in Mallorca:  

Ca’s Patró March $$, Can Costa $$, El Olivo $$$ (they all have sea views and have amazing dishes)

Best Hotels:

Tip for travelers with mobility issues:
If you’d rather avoid lots of driving, base yourself in Palma or Port de Sóller, where you can easily reach restaurants and beaches. For the best beaches with easy access I would suggest Playa de Muro or Cala Millor.

2. Barcelona, Spain: Culture, Cuisine, and Coastlines

Barcelona is one of my favorite places to travel to in October because it balances culture, food, and beach vibes. Imagine sipping sangria on a terrace with the Sagrada Familia peeking in the distance, and the weather is just perfect.

Barcelona can be packed in summer months and I went to Barcelona this August and we barely could move in the touristic areas. So we prefer to visit this beautiful city in October and September.

In contrast to summer, in October there is no summer humidity, too many tourists. Also the weather is warm enough to dip your toes in the Mediterranean.

Weather:

Around 23–24 °C in early October, dropping slightly later. Evenings are mild at 14–17 °C.

How to get around:

If you’re in Barcelona for the first time, I would suggest staying in the historical part. You can easily walk around and see all the attractions. Although if your hotel is in another area no problem, because public transportation is fantastic in Barcelona.

Additionally Taxis are also not that expensive and we used them to go from the historical part to La Sagrada Familia. But make sure they are using the meter.

Ideal Trip Length:

Technically I could stay even a week in Barcelona and wouldn’t get bored, but if you have a tight schedule, then 3 to 4 days is the sweet spot, specially for the first-timers. 

Places to visit:

La Sagrada Familia, Park Güell, Casa Batlló, Ciutadella Park, Montjuïc, Gothic Quarter.

Pro Tip: For La Sagrada Familia, we suggest to book your skip-the-line tickets in advance and if you love to know about the architecture and history of the church, we recommend to book a tour or you can read in advance here.

It takes 1.5 hours, unless you want to visit the tower and you’ll get the free time at the end to make as much as photos as you want. Here is the one we booked.

Barcelona’s Best Beaches:

Nova Icaria Beach is a quieter option near Port Olimpic and has a more family atmosphere. If you want something closer to the city, Barceloneta Beach is the most famous and busiest beach, right next to the city center.

Our most favorite one is Bogatell Beach which is known for being more relaxed and less crowded than Barcelona. Just take Line 4 (the yellow line) and get off at either Poblenou or Llacuna station. From there, it’s about a 10-minute walk down to the beach. 

My Favorite Restaurants:

El Xampanyet $$ (a must-visit), Cerveseria Catalana $$$ and our favorite tapas bar: Bilbao Berria which is located in the historical city $$$. We also love the Steak House Grill restaurant, the meat is fantastic. $$$$

Best Hotels in Barcelona:

Casa Bonay $$$ (central & Boutique Hotel), The Hoxton Poblenou $$$$.

Our Favorite mid-range Hotel is the Hotel Catalonia Caterdral $$$. It is located next to Cathedral of Barcelona in the heart of the historical city but it’s quite. If you book the master suits, they have their own pool, but there’s also a pool on the roof top with a bar. Check the availability here.

Comfort Notes for Senior Travelers:

The city involves a lot of walking, but the metro is very accessible, so don’t have to walk the whole city. For the beaches, Bogatell is flatter and calmer compared to busy Barceloneta, which makes it easier to enjoy.

3. Rome, Italy: Pasta, and History

Since we’re flying out from Canada and Rome is one of the most affordable flights from Toronto, we are almost 3 times in Rome per year. One of the best months in Rome is September and October. October in Rome feels like living in an open-air museum without the summer chaos. 

Rome is definitely one of the best places to travel in October. Walking through the Forum on a sunny autumn afternoon (with highs around 23–25 °C) is an experience I’ll never let go. That’s why we love to go there because Rome has many open-air sightseeing and the temperatures in October are the best. Not too warm and not too cold.  

Weather:

Warm days around 25 °C but cooler nights (11–14 °C).

How to get around:

Although we are mostly walking the whole city, but Rome has good metro lines (A, B and C) that cover the most important areas. It’s cheap and fast. Tickets are valid on all public transport and cost about 2$ for 100 minutes. Also buses and trams can fill the gaps where the metro doesn’t reach.

Ideal Trip Length:

Technically I could stay even a week in Rome and I would still need more time there. But if you don’t have that much time, we suggest at least 5 days. Of course you can also make it in 3 days, but best trip length for Rome is 5 to 7 days.

Places to visit in Rome:

Colosseum, Roman Forum, Palatine Hill, Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, Piazza Navona, Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel, St. Peter’s Basilica, Castel Sant’Angelo, Trastevere. 

Pro Tip: There’s so much more to visit in Rome, beautiful things like Santa Maria Maggiore which are not very famous, but a true hidden gem. If you have more time, check our full list fo rthe hidden gems in Rome. 

Although we’ve been to Colosseum and Forum many times, we still visit them again when we’re back in Rome. But I would suggest to book a tour or at least a skip-the-line-ticket to avoid the long queues. Here you can find our favorites.

We just came back from Rome (top on our list of best places to travel in October) and this time we stayed at the hotel Forum which is in the middle of the Ruins of Forum Romanum. For Travelers with mobility issues:

If you have problems walking up the stairs in Colosseum, don’t worry there is a lift that will bring you upstairs. If you take a guided tour, your guide is waiting for you and you can also go down with the lift.

4. Amalfi Coast, Italy 

Amalfi is heaven on earth, so if you haven’t been to this dreamy place, it’s definitely a sign to do so. While Amalfi coast is full of crowds in summer, September and October are the best months to enjoy the mild weather and even swim in the Mediterranean sea.

But I would suggest checking the weather before traveling to Amalfi. Even in August it can sometimes be rainy.

How To Get From Rome To The Amalfi Coast

Weather:

Warm days (21–23 °C) with  cooler nights (11–14 °C).

Which city to stay in Amalfi Coast:

If you’re on a budget, we always recommend staying in Sorrento or even Naples. Sorrento itself is a fantastic city with a beautiful view and best connections to the whole Amalfi Coast. If you need more details, check our post about Things to do in Sorrento. 

How to get around:

Driving this beautiful road is always our first option, although you can sometimes get stuck in traffic, but it’s still worth it. The views are incredible and unreal. But there are several things you need to consider before renting a car in Italy:

Pro Tip for Renting a Car in Italy

You can easily rent a car in Rome, Sorrento, or Naples — I usually book with Sixt and always choose full insurance for peace of mind. One habit I strongly recommend is taking photos of the car from every angle, both before & after. That way, you’re covered if any questions come up later.

When collecting the car additionally do a quick walk-around and check for any scratches, dents, or damage on the outside. I once had a car damaged by a sudden stone rainstorm, and luckily I spotted it early and swapped it right away.

My biggest advice? Don’t be shy — in Italy, customer service standards can feel different than in the US or Canada, so it’s better to check everything in advance. For price comparisons, I also like checking Rentalcars.com for deals.

Getting Around Without Driving

If you’d rather skip the stress of driving, the Amalfi Coast is still very easy to explore. Ferries run regularly from Naples and Sorrento to Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello, offering a scenic and relaxing way to travel. (Check out my full guide for more details!)

For the most budget-friendly option, hop on the local SITA buses. They connect the towns along the coast with departures roughly every 30 minutes. It’s not as glamorous as a ferry ride, but it’s affordable, reliable, and gets you just about anywhere you want to go.

Beleive me Amalfi is not just the best place to travel in October but any other month except winter. If you haven’t been to this paradise, this is your sign.

Extra Tips for Senior Travelers:

Many towns involve stairs. Staying in Sorrento (flatter and with better transport connections) is more comfortable than Positano if mobility is a concern. In Sorrento you can take the elevator to the beach level and get easily on the ferry to Positano or Amalfi. 

Also if you don’t have more than 3 days in Amalfi Coast and want to see Positano, Amalfi and Ravello, we would suggest taking a day-tour. We’ve tried it ourselves and it’s easier, if you don’t drive and have mobility issues.

The tour will drive you directly to the city center and will pick you up there as well. So you don’t have to walk up and down. We took a day-tour for Pompeii in the morning and Positano and Amalfi in the afternoon. Here is the link for booking. 

Ideal Trip Length:

I would say 3 to 5 days. It’s absolutely possible to make it within 3 days, but if you want it to be more relaxed and enjoy the beaches as well. I would suggest to stay at least 5 days.  

Places to visit:

Be sure to visit Positano with its colorful cliffside houses, Amalfi is the next station and its historical cathedral. Also Ravello is breathtaking with it’s gardens and panoramic views. If you don’t stay in Sorrento, still don’t miss it. It’s beautiful and it’s the gateway to the coast or a day trip to Capri Island. 

Travel hack: The sea was surprisingly warm in early October 2 years ago, as we’ve visited Amalfi’s Marina Grande beach and it felt heavenly. So take your swimwear with you.

Best Beaches in Amalfi Coast:

So let’s talk a bout the most important part. Yess! the beaches in Amalfi Coast. There are so many good ones, but our favorites are: Marina Grande (Positano), Fornillo Beach (Positano), Marina Grande (Amalfi), Duoglio Beach (Amalfi) this is a hidden gem. Castiglione Beach (Ravello). 

Pro Tip: Many beaches are pebbly, so bring water shoes for comfort. 

14 Best Places to travel in October

Senior-friendly beaches in Amalfi Coast:

Some beaches in Amalfi coast can have more than 100 stairs down to the beach, specially the ones in Amalfi and Positano. So going there with my mom this year, I realized not everyone can do that hiking. Here are the most Senior-friendly beaches in Amalfi Coast: 

Marina Grande (Amalfi) which is right by the town center and has no long stairs. Peter’s beach in Sorrento ahs an elevator to the beach and very few stairs. Maiori Beach is the longest and flattest stretch of sand on the coast. Also the promenade with cafes is very good accessible.  

Best Hotels in the Amalfi Coast:

• Amalfi: $$$ Hotel Fontana, $$$$$ Anantara Convento di Amalfi Grand hotel

5. Dubai, UAE: Sun, Swim & Luxury

Now let’s turn up the heat. Dubai in October is hot but not unbearable like in July or August. Although I had to travel to Dubai this August, because I was visiting Iran as the war happened and I was in the middle of it. Dubai is the best place to travel in October if you’re aiming to swim in the sea.

So I had to fly with the first flight from northern Iran (Mashhad) to Dubai. But surprisingly Dubai was still quite enjoyable, if you spend most of your time in the water. But in general, the best time to travel to Dubai is definitely in Spring and Autumn or even winter.

Why I love Dubai: Rooftop bars, desert safaris, and luxury hotels at shoulder-season prices. The best spa treatment you can have.

Weather:

With highs around 35 °C and warm evenings, this is one of the best countries to travel to in October if you want guaranteed sun and swimming.

How to get around:

In Dubai, we usually rely on a mix of taxis and the Uber. Taxis are affordable and plentiful. But if you can’t find a taxi, Uber is also fantastic. Metro is also another option, but honestly we never used it, because the taxis are cheap. For Safari we always take a tour, so no need to rent a car. 

Ideal Trip Length:

We recommend at least 4-5 days in Dubai. That gives you enough time to enjoy the beach, explore the desert and do shopping! 

Places to visit:

Burj Al Arab, Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall, Palm Jumeirah, Dubai Marina, Jumeirah Mosque, and the Desert Safari Experience is a must. It’s difficult to explain this feeling of sitting in the middle of the desert in an Arabic dress in the middle of the night. Dubai Marina is also another fantastic place, if you still have time. 

Safari Tour: Here is the Safari tour we took and no wonder the ratings, it was so much fun! it’s with pick up at the hotel and Camel ride with tattoo and many other extras. You’ll also have dinner in the middle of the dessert. It’s unbelievably beautiful . 

Pro Tip for Seniors on Safari tours: 

If you’re planning a desert safari, choose a tour that offers a gentle 4×4 drive or the option to skip the intense dune bashing. Here is the one we took with my parents and you should just tell them before you want to skip the dune bashing.

This one is with Coffee, Tea, Dinner, Camp Activities and BBQ with Traditional dance which we found very beautiful . Although Dubai is hot, bringing a jacket or a light scarf for the evening in the desert can be cool in October. 

In General, because of it’s comfort, Dubai is one of the best places to travel in October for Seniors.

JBR Beach, Kite Beach and La Mer Beach

My Favorite Restaurants:

$$ Al Fanar, $$$ Al Nafoorah: This restaurant is located at Jumeirah Al Qasr and one of the best views of Burj Al Arab (my favorite), Pierchic: We still love it because of it’s stunning view.$$$$

Best Hotels in Dubai:

• Luxury: $$$ Hotel Atlantis -the Palm, $$$$ Jumeirah Beach Hotel,$$$$$ Burj Al Arab
• Mid-Range: Novotel Suits mall Avenue $$, Rove Dubai Marina $$$, Millennium Place Dubai Marina $$$ (one of favorites, love to stay in Dubai Marina Promenade.

Tip: Avoid midday sightseeing, that’s the best time for a swim or shopping in the Malls. But evenings are perfect for strolling around the Marina or the Palm.

6. Canary Islands, Spain: Volcanoes and golden sands

One of the best places to travel in October in Europe, is the Canary Islands. These Spanish islands, just off the coast of Africa, are famous for their year-round sunshine and comfortable mild weather. We love that mix of warmth, variety, and accessibility. It’s one of the best travel destinations in October for us. 

Weather:

Tenerife and Gran Canaria stay sunny with temps around 20–26 °C.

How to get Around:

In the Canary Islands the easiest way to explore by renting a car. Roads are well maintained, and having a car gives you the freedom to discover hidden beaches and mountain villages.

We love to drive those scenic roads and discover new places. Also Public buses are available between towns, but they can be very slow.

Ideal Trip Length:

I’d recommend 5-7 days. Yessss! That gives you time to enjoy the beaches, take a volcano hike on Tenerife, and even hop between islands like Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, or Fuerteventura. 

Places to Visit:

Mount Teide (Tenerife), Timanfaya national Park (Lanzarote), Maspalomas Dunes (Gran Canaria), Corralejo natural Park (Fuerteventura), and the charming old town of La Laguna. 

Best Beaches in the Canary Islands:

Playa de las Teresitas (Tenerife), Playa de Papagayo (Lanzarote), Maspalomas Beach (Gran Canaria), Corralejo Natural Park (Fuerteventura), and the charming old town of La laguna.

14 Best Places to Travel in October

Best tips for Seniors:

The Canary Islands are quite hilly in places, but they’re also very accessible. Beaches like Playa de las Teresitas (Tenerife) or Playa de Maspalomas (Gran Canaria) have easy, flat access and plenty of facilities such as sunbeds, restrooms, and nearby cafés. 

If you prefer exploring without too much walking, many islands offer scenic bus tours or guided day trips that take you to viewpoints and volcanic landscapes without the hassle of driving yourself.

Although Canary Island is one of the best places to travel in October, but I still recommend to check the weather before traveling there at that time.

7. Cyprus: Ancient Ruins to Sandy Shores

Cyprus is another warm destination where you can easily go swimming even in October. It still feels like summer and believe me you will have the best summer vibes even in October. With highs around 26–28 °C, it’s easily one of the best places to vacation in October.

Swimming in turquoise water in mid-October felt surreal as we went there 2 years ago. Plus, the food scene (hello halloumi!) is incredible. So if swimming in sea is your goal, Cyprus is one of the best places to travel in October.

How to Get Around:

The best way to explore Cyprus is by renting a car.  We love to get a car and drive to the island .Cyprus is fairly large, and having your own wheels makes it easy to discover hidden beaches, ancient ruins, and charming mountain villages.

Roads are generally good, but remember — driving is on the left-hand side (a legacy of British rule). We normally get our car from sixt or europcars. You can check the prices here and find the best option. 

Public buses connect major towns like Nicosia, Limassol, Larnaca, and Paphos, but they can be infrequent if you want to visit smaller villages or beaches.

Best Tours in Cyprus:

If you don’t want to rent a car, there are fantastic tours that you can book and explore the island, without the hassle of driving. If you want to go for the guided tours, we recommend taking the Troodos Mountains & Wine Villages Tours. It’s gorgous and you’ll pass through traditional villages like Omodos and taste local wines.  

We also have another favorite that we will surely go for it again. The Blue Lagoon Boat Trip from Latchi or from Paphos. It’s a must try for only around 70 $. The water is just unbelievable. Blue Lagoon is a highlight and shouldn’t miss that one. Here you can find the one we booked.

Ideal Trip Length:

We recommend spending 5–7 days in Cyprus. That gives you time to enjoy the beaches, explore historic sites like Kourion and Paphos, and maybe even take a day trip into the Troodos Mountains for fresh air and vineyards. Believe me you don’t want to leave.

Places to Visit: Paphos Archaeological Park, Kourion Ruins, Troodos Mountains, Ayia Napa Monastery, Limassol Marina, and the divided capital of Nicosia.

Best Beaches in Cyprus:

Nissi Beach (Ayia Napa), Fig Tree Bay (Protaras), Coral Bay (Paphos), and Makronissos Beach (Ayia Napa).

My Favorite Restaurants:

Meze Taverna (Limassol) $$$: we loved this cute restaurant that everything looks like home-made. $$$$ Ristorante Bacco (Paphos)

Best Hotels:

$$ Pyramos Hotel (Paphos), $$$ Amavi Hotel adults-only resort in Paphos with sea views and great amenities (it’s pure luxury), $$$$$ Anassa Hotel: This hotel is just 5 minutes drive from Latchi and the view is breathtaking with fantastic spa options. Best place to relax. The only problem is that you don’t want to leave!

If you’re aiming for a beach vacation, Cyprus is one of the best places to travel in October.

8. Marrakesh, Morocco: Souks, Spices and Safari

October in Morocco is like stepping into a colorful dream. I’ll never forget wandering through Marrakech’s souks under 25 °C skies. The weather is warm but not overwhelming and it’s the best time for both desert tours and coastal breaks like Essaouira without the full crowd.

How to Get Around:

In Marrakesh, the best way to get around the city is on foot and by taxi. Medina’s narrow alleys are not car-friendly, so walking is the only way to explore souks and historic sites. 

For longer trips, stick with petit taxis within the city. Public buses exist but can be confusing for visitors, so I do not recommend it. But always check with your hotel, as they might have shuttles to the Souk.

Ideal Trip Length:

I’d suggest 3–4 days in Marrakesh. That gives you time to explore the bustling souks, visit palaces and gardens, and take a hiking day trip to the Atlas Mountains. If you like mountains like me with small villages, its a must-visit and for that I would definitely recommend. For more details, you can check here.  

Places to Visit:

Jemaa el-Fnaa Square, Bahia Palace, Majorelle Garden, Saadian Tombs, Koutoubia Mosque, and the Medina souks. For a quick escape, the Atlas Mountains are just an hour away.

Best Experiences:

Evening walks through Jemaa el-Fnaa are a must and I would also try a traditional hammam spa. My favorite one is the Spa Royal Mansour. Its luxury and offers a full sensory experience rooted in Moroccan tradition. Also don’t forget to try the Moroccan mint tea.

My Favorite Restaurants:

There are many local restaurants with charm, but my favorites in Marrakesh are $$ Café des Épices,  $$$ Le Jardin, $$$$ La Mamounia.

Best Hotels:

$$ Riad Dar Justo (boutique hotel), $$$$ Les Jardins de la Koutoubia, $$$ la Mamouni

Tour Tip: Take a tour to the Atlas Mountains. It’s a fantastic Day trip and the tour that we took included visits to Berber villages, scenic viewpoints and it was a refreshing contrast. It’s definitely worth it. Check the one we took here.  

9 & 10. Lisbon & Algarve – Portugal Affordable & Good Food

Another one of my favorites to travel in October is Portugal but the southern part. Actually any time of the year is good to travel to Portugal. While Northern side can be a bit windy and cooler during the Fall season, the southern part, specially Lisbon and the Algarve are still mild. 

Algarve still feels like summer in October and if you mix it with visiting Lisbon it’s the perfect combination: a capital city full of history, culture, and incredible food, paired with golden beaches, dramatic cliffs, and turquoise waters. 

Weather:

While Lisbon gives you sunny 22–24 °C days with vibrant city life, in Algarve it is still beach time at 24–26 °C.

How to Get Around in Lisbon & Algarve:

In Lisbon, the metro, buses, and iconic yellow trams make it easy to get around without a car. The city is very walkable and we normally just walk around or get a Tuk-tuk. Although tuk-tuks can sometimes be very expensive. 

For the Algarve, renting a car is the best choice. Public transport between beaches and towns can be slow, but with a car you can easily explore hidden coves and cliffside viewpoints at your own pace. We normally book a car in Lisbon and just drive down to Algarve. The views are scenic and the drive is around 3 hours. 

Southern Portugal is better than the northern part in October. Northern Portugal is a bit windy and colder than the southern part. If you love road trips like us, doing a road trip from Lisbon to Algarve is the best activity. In General, Portugal is one of the best places to travel in October.

Ideal Trip Length:

I’d recommend 5–7 days: spend 4 days in Lisbon and then head south for 3 days in the Algarve to enjoy beaches and coastal scenery.

Places to Visit:

In the Algarve: Lagos’s cliffs and old town, Benagil Cave, Praia da Marinha, and charming coastal villages like Carvoeiro or Tavira.

Best Beaches in the Algarve:

Praia da Marinha, Praia do Camilo, Praia da Rocha, and Meia Praia (Lagos).

Lisbon is famous for its Fado Music and our favorite is Parreirinha de Alfama in the Alfama district. This cozy traditional restaurant is operating since 1939 and we love the atmosphere. I would definitely make a reservation. Love the garlic shrimps there.

Best Hotels In Lisbon:

Must-visit in Algarve:

We loved the Algarve Benagil Cave Tour. The one we took, was about 5 hours and the view of the caves were breathtaking. I recommend to book a tour to catch the sunset. You can also visit Praia da Marinha and spend around 1.5 there, walking, swimming and Sightseeing. The price is $75/Person. Here is the link if you want more details.

My Tips for seniors or people with Mobility:

Lisbon is beautiful but hilly, with slippery cobblestone streets, specially in the Alfama district. But you can easily avoid steep climbs by using tuk-tuks, trams, or taxis. But as many other places in Europe, you shall ask the price in advance, to make sure the price is fair.

We realized that specially in the high season, the tuk tuk prices are even higher than the normal taxis, so check in advance to make sure, you’re not paying too much.  

In the Algarve, stick to beaches with easy access like Praia da Rocha or Albufeira’s main beach, which both have ramps and nearby facilities. Lisbon is though one of the best places to travel in October in October, as it’s warm and very good accebile.

11 & 12. Istanbul & Antalya – Turkey: From Minarets to Beaches

Turkey is one of those countries that I can go back there every year, and still I haven’t seen everything. This country can truly give you the best of both worlds in October.

In Istanbul, you can wander through centuries of history, while still enjoying mild autumn sunshine. and the weather is around 20–22 °C.

Further south in Antalya, it’s still summer with warm Mediterranean waters. Antalya offers 25–27 °C during the days and what I love about Antalya are the resorts.

Before starting my guide, Turkey is about culture, food, and relaxation for me, all wrapped in warm weather and stunning scenery and one of the great places to travel in October for us.

How to Get Around:

Istanbul is a large city, but it has an excellent public transport system. We normally either use the tram or metro lines to go around or get a taxi. If you stay in the historical part, then you can easily walk around.

Taxis are also good choices but make sure the meter is on. They can be very expensive without the meter and always check in advance how much they charge.

Best Areas to Stay in Istanbul in 2025!

For Antalya you normally don’t need a car or transfer as it’s mostly about relaxing in resorts. Although it also has a good tram and bus connection. For exploring the surrounding coastline and ancient ruins, we recommend to book guided tours, it’s easier and doesn’ t break the bank. 

Pro Tip: Most of the hotels have shuttles to the city centers or airports but sometimes the price of the shuttles are higher than a taxi. So check the prices with the hotels before ordering one.

Ideal Trip Length:

Spend 3–4 days in Istanbul and 3-5 days in Antalya. 

Places to Visit in Istanbul:

There are so many and that’s why for the full list check my post about things to do in Istanbul. But here are the must-visits: Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace, Basilica, Grand Bazaar, Spice Bazaar, Galata Tower, and a Bosphorus cruise to see the city from the water.

Istanbul is one of the best places to travel in October to enjoy the perfect weather, doing historical sightseeing and also Water Cruises.

Places to Visit in Antalya:

Kaleiçi (old town), Hadrian’s Gate, Düden Waterfalls, Konyaaltı Beach, Lara Beach, and day trips to Perge, Aspendos, or Termessos ruins.

Best Experiences:

In Istanbul one of the things we’re always doing, even after so many times visiting this city, is to get a Sunset ferry ride across the Bosphorus. It’s so dreamy. They will pick you up at the hotel with a luxury van and take you right to the ferry, which is more like a Yachts. They will also serve snacks and drinks. The tour is around 2 hours. And this is all for 54 $.

In Antalya we highly recommend to visit Pamukkale Hot Springs. We took a tour from Antalya with lunch and also visited Hierapolis. It takes around 12 hours. Again you will be picked up at the hotel. Pamukkale is stunning and also the ruins of Hierapolis is absolutely worth it. They are both listed in UNESCO world Heritage.

The tour start very early in the morning but believe me it’s so worth it. The road from Antalya to Pamukkale is long, that’s why they do some stops at Korkuteli to have breakfast.

My Favorite Restaurants:

$$$$$ Mikla (Beyoğlu) with Skyline view, Tuğra Restaurant (Çırağan Palace) – Ottoman cuisine in a palace , $$$ Ciya Sofrası (Kadıköy) –  loved by locals, Karaköy Lokantası, Tarihi Sultanahmet.

In Antalya we mostly ate at our resorts or during the tours, so I don’t have any recommendations.

Best Hotels Istanbul:

Best Beaches in Antalya:

Konyaaltı Beach, Lara Beach, and Kaputaş Beach (a little further along the coast) but really worth it to visit. The view is very picturesque and the water is so blue. With it’s dramatic cliffside is a dream for photography, relaxing and everything else.

If you’re aiming for a beach vacation in October, Antalya is one of the best places to travel in October.

13 & 14. Crete & Rhodes – Greece: Golden Beaches & Ancient Wonders

October in Greece still feels like summer, especially in Crete and Rhodes is still around 24–26 °C. Athens is slightly cooler but perfect for exploring ruins. When it comes to the best places to travel in Octoer in Europe, Greece always has a special spot on my list.

Crete and Rhodes both offer golden beaches, crystal-clear waters, and just the right balance of sunshine and cooler evenings. In Crete, you’ll find ancient history at the Palace of Knossos, charming Venetian towns, and some of the most beautiful beaches in the Mediterranean.

Rhodes, on the other hand, combines medieval charm with those relaxing beaches. We love to take a walk through the Old Town. It feels like stepping back in time. Together, these islands give you the perfect mix of culture, relaxation, and warmth — exactly what you need for an autumn escape.

How to Get Around:

We always rent a car in both Crete and Rhodes to explore the hidden gems and travel from one city to another. So we recommend to get a car if you can, as it’s a bit difficult to travel around without a car. We normally book our car through DiscoverCars, so that we can check different prices and you have free cancellation.

How to Get around in Crete:

If you don’t want to rent a car, you have different options. If your flight arrives at Heraklion Airport and your hotel is in the city there are frequently buses which take you to the city. (Every 20 minutes for 2 $). You can Also book a taxi.

But if you’re staying outside Heraklion, you can connect via KTEL intercity buses from the Heraklion Central Bus station.

Budget Travel in Greece: If you’re arriving at the Chania Airport, your best option is the KTEL airport bus which brings you directly to the city. For Budget Transfer: You can use the airport bus and come to the city, then take a taxi to your hotel.

How to Get Around in Rhodes:

Again our favorite option is to drive around the island and get a rental car, but if you want to go for public transport, here our recommendations:

In Rhodes you have two systems, RODA and KTEL. RODA is the blue city bus that will take from town to town for shorter trips. For longer routes like Rhodes Town to Lindos or Pefkos, you can take KTEL for around 6 $ (one way). Although in summer the buses are full, so you need to go the station early.

Taxis are also available and for sight-seeing you can easily use the Hop-on hop-off buses.

Ideal Trip Length:

Greece is one of the best places to travel in October to enjoy the sun, swiming and history. So plan at least 5 days in Crete to balance history and beaches, and 3–5 days in Rhodes for a mix of culture and coastal relaxation.

Rhodes is smaller than Crete and if you’re only choosing one, Crete is better for variety, while Rhodes is ideal for a shorter, laid-back trip. I remember the first time I traveled to Crete, I planed a 3-days-trip and I ended up staying for 15 days there.

Places to Visit:

• In Crete: Palace of Knossos, Chania Old Town, Rethymno, Samaria Gorge, and Elafonissi Beach. And my favorite part of staying in Crete is Agios Nikolaos. It’s such a cute stunning city.
• In Rhodes: Rhodes Old Town, Palace of the Grand Master, Lindos Acropolis, Mandraki Harbor, and Tsambika Beach.

Best Beaches:

Crete: Elafonissi (pink sands) It’s a must-visit, Balos Lagoon, Falassarna.
Rhodes: Anthony Quinn Bay, Lindos Beach, Tsambika Beach.

These Islands are both one of our Favorite best places to travel to in October to enjoy the full sun and relax before the winter starts in Toronto!

My Favorite Restaurants:

$$ Ippokambos (Crete), $$ Tamam (Rhodes), $$$$ Noble (Rhodes with sea views)

Best Hotels:

My favorite hotel: in Crete in Agios Nikolaos is Minos Beach Art Hotel $$$$, which has its own beach and its paradise. We love to go there. But for summer time, you need to book a year in advance or even more. Check the availability and prices here.

Also $$ Hotel Kastro in Crete is a wonderful hotel if you’re traveling on budget. It was clean and comfortable and totally worth the price.

Another luxury hotel that we stayed a night, was the Blue Palace Resort in Crete and it’s another fantastic luxury hotel and you need to book it long in advance. We were lucky to stay here for only 1 night during our visit and it’s lovely. Check the availability here.

In Rhodes we stayed at a cute and clean budget hotel called Hotel Galaxias (Rhodes) and it’s the best place to stay in Rhodes on budget. We loved it.

If you’re looking for a luxury stay in Rhodes, we suggest Lindos Blu Luxury Hotel: it’s an adults only beautiful hotel and actually it’s an ultra luxury with a great sea view. Also the pool’s view is great for instagrammers.

3 Must-Visit Tours in Crete & Rhodes

• Knossos Palace & Heraklion Museum Tour (Crete) – If you are a history lover and like to see the ruins and the museums of this beautiful island, you’ll love this tour. It’s about into Minoan history with a guided tour. We really enjoyed it. It takes around 2 hours.
• Samaria Gorge Excursion (Crete) – If you love hiking this is a stunning hiking route, we’ve done with a small tour group. I do recommend to do in a group as the paths can be confusing if you don’t know the place. This is a professional hiking path. It’s so worth it.

Senior-Friendly Tips 👒

• In Crete, distances between sites can be long, so choose tours with hotel pick-up. Beaches like Elafonissi have boardwalks and easy access.
• In Rhodes, the Old Town has cobbled streets, so wear sturdy shoes. Use taxis or shuttles to Lindos to skip steep climbs, and pick resorts with direct beach access for comfort.
