Toronto is one of the most lively cities in Canada, and if you’re visiting this beautiful country, you should definitely stay at least a weekend in Toronto. It’s hard to just pick 12 attractions in Toronto, as it’s full of cool places to visit.

But if your time is limited, I selected the things you can miss, while visiting Toronto. Also check our guide about the best time to visit Toronto as a first-timer, as winter time can be really surprising, if you’re not used to -30C.

Best Hotel to Stay in Downtown Toronto

Our favorite hotel in Downtown Toronto is the Marriott Downtown CF and I highly recommend it.

It’s next to the biggest shopping Mall in downtown Toronto (Eaton Center) and 5 minutes walk to the main square of the city, Nathan-Philip-Square.

How to get around in Toronto

Toronto Downtown is very walkable and in Summer or Fall, you really just want to walk around and enjoy the weather. But you can also easily get the street cars and TTC (metro) to travel from A to B.

The cost of the TTC is only $3 and is valid 2 hours. That means you can use a metro, bus, streetcar and all of the TTC transportation options with 1 ticket. Also there are lots of Taxis and Ubers in the city. But you can Easily walk around.

Most of the attractions in this guide are located in downtown Toronto, so you can easily walk to most of them. For the ones, which are a bit farther I’ve added the TTC stations and how to reach them with the car.

I also added a Map with all the attractions and good hotels at the end of this post, so that you can find them easier.

Visiting Niagara Falls from Toronto

If you’re visiting Toronto, I highly recommend to visit Niagara Falls, which is only 1.5 ride from Union Station in Downtown Toronto.

The views are breathtaking and it’s a must-visit. There’s so much to do in Niagara Falls, but we definitely recommend to do the Niagara City Cruise and the Journey behind the Falls. Book your activities here.

1. CN Tower – The Famous Symbol of Toronto

You can’t miss CN Tower, when visiting Toronto. It’s basically the VIEW in Toronto and it sparkles from each and every corner of the city.

And once the tallest tower in the world, it still has it’s special charm. To visit this beautiful tower with 553 meters height, I highly recommend to book your tickets online in advance. Specially during the summer month, it can get very busy and you might need to wait long. Here is their official website to book.

There’s so much to do at CN Tower and you can easily combine it with the Ripley’s Aquarium next to it and Toronto Railway Museum. You can also only enjoy the views from the observation desk at the CN Tower, or you can have a romantic dinner at the revolving 360 Restaurant. But there’s so much more to do, so let’s dive in.

Hours of Operation

The Tower is open from 9am to 10:30 Pm, but in summer months we have extended hours. You can check the seasonal changes on their official website. But the restaurant and the observation desk are open a bit longer.

Best Things To Do at the CN Tower

These are my favorite things to do at the Cn Tower and I would at least count with 3 hours to do the whole tour and enjoy the views.

Visit the Observation Deck:

The CN Tower features multiple observation decks, offering panoramic views of Toronto and beyond. The Look Out Level is located 346 meters above the ground and provides a 360-degree view of the city skyline, Lake Ontario, and on clear days, Niagara Falls.

It’s an unforgettable experience, especially during sunset when the city lights begin to twinkle. So make sure, that you’ll at least go for one of those. And If you like it a little bit more scary like me, head to the Glass Floor on the LookOut Level.

You’ll be walking on a transparent surface, giving you the sensation of floating above the city. I’m sure you’ll love it. I normally avoid heights like this, but believe me, I could manage it. It’s one of the major attractions in Toronto.

SkyPod: 

is one of the highest observation points in the world, located 447 meters above the ground. For a more private and exclusive experience, head up to the SkyPod for an elevated view that stretches for miles, including views of the surrounding regions of Ontario and New York State.

EdgeWalk:

For thrill-seekers, the EdgeWalk is an exhilarating experience. (That’s the Picture I made above, but honestly wasn’t that brave to do it myself, so I’m just the photographer). Edgewalk is one of the coolest attractions in Toronto!

It’s the world’s highest hands-free outdoor walk, allowing you to walk around the tower’s main pod at 356 meters above the ground. Harnessed for safety, you’ll get a unique perspective of Toronto’s skyline and can even lean out over the edge for an adrenaline rush.

Dining at the CN Tower

CN Tower offers 2 dining options for visitors:

1. 360 Restaurant: Let me tell you honestly, it’s a must-visit restaurant and you’ll love the view. If you go there before 6, you might find a spot, unless I do recommend to make a reservation. The food is amazing, but do not expect too much from the service like all the other touristic areas… But still It’s a unique dining experience in Toronto. Located on the LookOut Level, it offers stunning views of the city and the dishes are so delicious and it’s offering a gourmet cuisine. As said, I do recommend reservations.
2. Le Café: If you’re looking for a more casual dining experience, Le Café on the main level is a great option. It offers coffee, light bites, and pastries in a relaxed atmosphere. It’s perfect for a quick stop before or after exploring the tower.

Tips for Visiting the CN Tower:

• Best Time to Visit: If you want to avoid crowds, try visiting early in the morning before 10am. But I love to go there for Sunset and although it’s always crowded at that time, you’ll get a chance to enjoy the beauty of the view and the lake Ontario.
• Tickets: Tickets can be purchased online in advance for a discount, or on-site if you prefer. If you’re planning to dine at 360 Restaurant, tickets for the observation deck are included with your reservation.

If you are an adventurer, CN Tower is one of the main attractions in Toronto. I would take a full day to explore the tower and the Rigley Aquarium which is next to it. You can either do it by yourself or if you are rather a person who likes to be in a group, this is the tour I would suggest.

2. Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada

Ever been to an underwater world with Sharks? If not here in Toronto you have a chance to get close to sharks without being swallowed. Get ready for an underwater adventure! At the beginning, I thought this might be something just for kids, but that’s not true. I still go there myself every once a while to delve within the sea world.

Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada is one of Toronto’s most fascinating and family-friendly attractions. It’s right next to CN Tower and you can easily do it within the same day. This underwater wonderland offers a unique opportunity to explore marine life from around the world. Here’s a complete guide to help you make the most of your visit.

Ripley’s Aquarium is open daily from 9:00 AM to 11:00 PM. However, hours may vary by season and during holidays, so I do recommend to check the website.

Must-See spots at Ripley’s Aquarium

1. Shark Lagoon: is one of my favorite places as you can walk through a tunnel that takes you right under the water, where you can see several species of sharks, including the impressive Sand Tiger Shark.
2. Dangerous Lagoon: with more than 17,000 aquatic animals, including stingrays, giant groupers, and sea turtles is the best part of the Glass Tunnel.
3. Discovery Centre: where you can touch and learn about various sea creatures, including rays and small sharks, in the Shallow Water Touch Pool.
4. Canadian Waters: it’s Canadian Waters exhibit. This section features animals that can be found in the lakes and oceans around Canada, such as the stunning Great Lakes, giant sturgeon, and playful otters.
5. Ocean Wisdom emphasizes the importance of marine conservation and the role we all play in protecting our oceans.

Dining at Ripley’s Aquarium

No Restaurants, but there are several great spots nearby for dining. My most favorite spot is Steam Whistle Brew House, which is right in front of the Aquarium and you get the best home-made Canadian Beer, right from the factory. Although the Aquarium Café, located at the main entrance, offers a variety of snacks and beverages, including hot and cold drinks, sandwiches, and snacks, perfect for a quick break.

• Tickets: You can purchase tickets online for discounts or at the entrance.
• Interactive Experiences: Ripley’s Aquarium also offers behind-the-scenes tours and interactive animal encounters for a more hands-on experience.

3.Distillery District- Toronto’s Historic Attraction

This is the most entertaining area in Toronto. I remember the first time I’ve visited Distillery District, I thought I am walking in a film city. It is one of Toronto’s most unique and vibrant neighborhoods, offering a perfect blend of history, culture, and modern creativity. So make sure you won’t miss this charming spot.

You can either take a tour and here my recommendation for you. But you can also just walk there yourself. I do recommend to take a tour, first time you’re visiting Distillery, as I did that as well, and you can learn the history and the story behind each building.

But if you want to do it alone, it’s located east of downtown Toronto and it’s like a small city which is a pedestrian-only area. When you walk through the Distillery District you have the feeling of going back to the time of Victorian-era with cobblestone streets, and artistic atmosphere.

But Whether you’re a history enthusiast or a foodie, you will love this place and it’s a go to place in Toronto. I would recommend going there hungry, as you’ll find many options to taste. Here’s a complete guide to help you make the most of your visit.

Most of the area is accessible 24/7. Shops, restaurants, and galleries have varying hours. Typically, stores and galleries are open from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM, and many restaurants and bars stay open until late in the evening.

My top spots to see in the Distillery District

1. Historic Architecture and Cobblestone Streets: One of the best ways to explore the Distillery District is simply by walking through its charming streets.
2. Art Galleries: The Arta Gallery and Elliott Louis Gallery are just a couple of the standout spots where you can view and purchase unique pieces.
3. Shopping for Local Goods: If you like to support the local shops, here you can find many small shops with one-of-a-kind items, from handmade jewelry to high-end Clothing stores like The Distillery District Shop feature locally designed items.

2. Cluny Bistro & BoulangerieCluny Bistro is a must-visit French-inspired restaurant with a chic, modern ambiance. You can either have some snacks in the bistro or a fine-dining dish at the restaurant.
3. The Mill Street Brewpub: When Beer meets History, located in the heart of the Distillery District. This is heaven for all the craft beer lovers. I do suggest to pair your beer with a hearty burgers.

Tips for Visiting the Distillery District

• How to reach using Toronto Public transportation: There is limited parking in district, so consider taking pubic transit. Here is how you can easily get there: From the King street you can walk towards the King Street TTC streetcar stop. Board Streetcar 504A (King) going EAST. This streetcar will take you directly to the Distillery District.

4.Toronto Islands: A Beautiful Escape

As a new-comer I also had to learn that it’s not just about the centre Island. There are more islands there and I must say that Centre Island is not my favorite one, but it’s absolutely a must visit.

This is one of the best-kept secrets in Toronto. The Toronto Islands are located just a short ferry ride from the city’s waterfront, this group of small islands is a popular destination for both locals and tourists.

I’m almost there every other week in summer to enjoy the beach atmosphere and the walk through the forest. I also love to do the photography and videography, specially during the sunset. One of the best sunset attractions in Toronto!

How to Get to Toronto Islands

Reaching the Toronto Islands is easy, with regular ferry services available from Jack Layton Ferry Terminal, located at the foot of Bay Street near downtown Toronto. Ferries run year-round and take about 15-20 minutes to reach the islands.

• Ferry Service Hours: Ferries operate throughout the day, with departures as early as 8:00 AM and the last ferry leaving around 11:00 PM in the summer. Check the ferry schedule in advance, especially during peak seasons, as ferries can fill up quickly. I do recommend to book online in advance during summer time.

Best Islands to Explore

1. Centre Island is the most popular and easily accessible of all the Toronto Islands. It offers a wide variety of attractions and activities, making it perfect for a day trip. So take a day for exploring this beautiful area. Highlights include:

6.Royal Ontario Museum: One of the best attractions in Toronto to explore with kids

The Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) is one of Toronto’s most iconic landmarks and Canada’s largest museum dedicated to art, culture, and natural history. It’s situated in downtown Toronto at 100 Queen’s Park, it attracts over a million visitors annually with its impressive exhibits and world-renowned collections and I do recommend to take a walk at Queen’s Park afterward and enjoy the beauty of the old trees and historical buildings of Toronto University.

I mostly like the part about Dinosaurs and the indigenous culture. Those are always on my list, when visiting the museum.

7.Harourfront Centre – Arts, Culture, and Waterfront Views

This place is my scape from the crowded city of Toronto, although it’s right there in downtown. I love the vibe and the culture of this promenade look area with gigantic arcs, Taxi boats and restaurants.

So you can always find some entertaining event over there, and if not, you can just enjoy the view, either in winter or in summer. It’s always charming. I love just standing there and watch the flights departing from Toronto’s mini airport (Billy Bishop) which is right next to it.

1. Queens Quay Promenade: The Queens Quay Promenade is a bustling walkway that runs parallel to Lake Ontario. Perfect for a never ending walk along the lake, so don’t try to finish the road, it’s quite long. But if you like to bike, I do suggest to bike along the path and explore more. There is a seprate bike way along the lake.
2. HTO Park A popular urban beach located west of the Harbourfront Centre, HTO Park features golden sand, yellow umbrellas, and Adirondack chairs. While swimming is not allowed, it’s the perfect spot to sunbathe, read, or picnic with a lake view.
3. Toronto Music Garden: I truely love this Garden, especially in summer, it’s so realxing. Inspired by Bach’s Suite No. 1 in G Major for Unaccompanied Cello, the Toronto Music Garden is a serene space that combines music and landscape design. Its winding pathways, flowers, and open lawns offer tranquility amidst the city’s buzz. The garden also hosts free summer concerts.
4. Sugar Beach: Just east of the Harbourfront Centre lies Sugar Beach, another urban beach with pink umbrellas and white sand. The reason it’s called Sugar Beach is beacause it’s next to the Sugar Factory. It’s industrial lake view makes it a unique experience for photography.

There are several good restaurants in that area, but my favorite is Amsterdam Brew House that serves delicious meals with waterfront patios and local beer.

It’s an all year round attraction in Toronto. Even in winter it’s fascinating.

If you love Cherry Blossoms and Photography, you need to visit Toronto during spring and put High Park on the top of your list. It’s one of the best destinations to visit during spring and fall. High Park Toronto is one of the most instagramable attractions in Toronto!

This park is located in the heart of Toronto and is one of the city’s largest and most beloved green spaces. Spanning 400 acres, it offers a diverse range of outdoor activities, cultural attractions, and scenic beauty, making it a popular destination for both locals and tourists. Whether you’re interested in nature, history, or simply relaxing, High Park has something for everyone.

Best time to visit for Photography:

High Park is always beautiful, but my favorite season there is the cherry blossom season and this park is famous for it’s stunning view. To get the best shots, try to go there very early, specially on weekends, as it’s going to be crowded after 10am.

Although you can still catch amazing selfies, but for nature photographers, it’s a bit difficult, as people are all over the park with different dresses to do selfies, which also has it’s own beauty and vibe.

High Park is renowned for its lush landscapes, including forests, meadows, and tranquil ponds. The park is home to various wildlife, such as squirrels, rabbits, and over 200 species of birds, making it a great spot for nature enthusiasts and birdwatchers.

This hidden-gem attraction Toronto’s is a must-visit spot. Even many locals don’t know about it but it’s a beautiful fairytale and you can always find an event or concert going on there. I love Casa Loma specially during Christmas, when the Christmas Tunnel is connecting the two castles together.

So make sure, when visiting Toronto, you won’t miss this place. It’s located in the heart of Toronto with it’s stunning Gothic Revival mansion that offers visitors a glimpse into the city’s past while immersing them in its grand architectural beauty.

Casa Loma, which means “Hill House” in Spanish, was the vision of Sir Henry Pellatt, a wealthy businessman and military officer who built the castle between 1911 and 1914. Unfortunately, Pellatt’s financial struggles led to the loss of the property in 1924, and Casa Loma became a public attraction in 1937. Today, it stands as a historical site and a popular tourist destination.

What to See and Do

Walk through the Castle and just enjoy the beauty

My most favorite room is the Grand Room with it’s high ceiling and bright walls. I could spend hours in the library, with it’s rich wood paneling. That room is mostly used for weddings and private events.

Discover the Secret Passages

One of the highlights of Casa Loma is its secret passages and hidden tunnels, which were designed to provide discreet access to different parts of the mansion. It’s open for visitors and I do recommend it, if you are a fan of mysterious places. You can also visit the Garage with old – timer cars as well as the Wax museum on your way.

Enjoy the beauty of the Gardens

Casa Loma’s beautifully manicured gardens offers a fantastic view from the city, as it’s built on the hill. With over 5 acres of grounds, including a stunning terrace, rose garden, and seasonal blooms, it’s a perfect spot for a relaxing walk or to take your perfect selfie. In summer and spring, it’s stunning.

Wax Museum

Although it’s in my opinion not the best wax Museum, but the interesting thing is to find out which Hollywood films has been made there in Casa Loma. You will be surprised that X-Men and Chicago were recorded in Casa Loma and many other ones. So it’s definitely worth a visit and you can also take a red carpet picture as well.

11. Spadina Museum

One of my favorite places to visit in Toronto for free, is the Spadina Museum. This beautiful house goes back to 1900s and is full of history. Also the garden of the house, is one of the most beautiful ones in Toronto. Specially during spring, it’s full of Lilac and blossoms.

Where is Spadina Museum?

Although it’s located next to Casa Loma, but many people don’t know it. You can easily combine visiting Casa Loma and Spadina Museum in one day. The Tour is about 45 minutes and it’s truly amazing. The exact adress is in the 285 Spadina Road, Toronto, Ontario.

There is a parking available at the Museum or you can park at Casa Loma, and walk there. But you can also easily reach there with TTC and the closest station is Dupont Station. From there, it’s around 10 minutes walk or you can just take the Baldwin Stairs up there.

12. Bata Shoe Museum

Another very interesting Museum to visit in Toronto, is the Bata shoe Museum in Toronto, which is located very close to the Royal Ontario Museum. So I suggest to combine it with the ROM.

In this museum you can see the history of footwear with more than 15000 shoes with more than 4,500 years of history. I loved the section about Ancient footwear and the Egyptian shoes. But you can also find celebrity shoes worn by artists or singers like Marilyn Monroe and Elton John.

Where is Bata Shoe Museum?

You will need around 1,5 in the museum and it’s located at the 327 Bloor Street West, Toronto. Also the closest TTC Station is the St. George Station, which is only a minute walk to the museum. The ticket is around $16 for adults and $5 for the children above 5.
